I think the only one out of The Dude, Donny and Walter that you could possibly describe as anarcho-capitalist is Walter with his vigilantism (against Bunny, the kidnappers) and general indifference to the law ("I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock"). Though personally, I'd say Walter's some sort of republican, as his pro-imperialist stance, ie. 'Nam and 'the camel fucker in Iraq', stands against the isolationism of anarcho-capitalism.

The Dude rejects the capitalist/ protestant work ethic, is a radical liberal*/ hippy and a pacifist (ideologically, but not in practice). As for Donny, well he's just a rabbit caught in headlights...

*note the contrast between him and the elitist Maude, especially in this scene.

Edit: lol THIS SHIT JUST GOT SERIOUS

I agree, Walter is definitely some kind of Anarcho-capitalist/Neo-Conservative hybrid.

Ah, you know what tho, the Dude talks about signing the "original" Port Huron statement, "before they watered it down". That's the document that coined the term "new left". The Dude is def an ex 60s radical, through and through.

And he was one of the Seattle Seven... him and six other guys. The Dude was actually based on this guy of the Seattle Seven.

I love how the focus of this thread has just become an analysis of the characters of The Big Lebowski. This film permeates everything!!

Don't forget, the Dude was also a roadie for Metallica at some point....bunch of assholes.

Indeed, and this thread has been properly derailed by our little Lebowski fest... which is over the line. We need to bear in mind, this is not 'Nam, this is Libcom. There are rules.

The debated happened, and (according to the more discriminating observers) the anarchosyndicalists won! There was no official winner really though. It was quite fun and nowhere near as disastrous as I had anticipated. Transcripts/other debate materials will be posted on libcom soon...

I'm honestly shocked by this. Wasn't it something like five hours long? I can't imagine any debate (or discussion or whatever) going on for that long and not being painful.

I am interested to read or listen to it though, at least some of the participants were some pretty sharp folks.
