Black Plaque Project

Before I start, this thread has nothing to do with dental hygiene.

The forthcoming Cable St anniversary reminded me of a project that I tried unsuccessfully to launch some years ago. I want to create a working class version of the Blue Plaque (where famous people or events are celebrated by a Blue Plaque at significant locations throughout the UK). The 'Black Plaque' (or 'Red & Black Plaque' if you'd prefer) would commemorate those people and events that are usually forgotten or, at best, abandoned to the margins of history (for instance, there is nothing at York Castle to lament the judicial murder of the Luddites). The project would be relatively simple, needing only some form of plaque, the ever handy 'No More Nails' and a website, but it has the potential to generate a lot of attention. It would also be a good excuse for a day trip – and a way of meeting other people around the UK.

I'd like to use this thread to...

A: Encourage interest from groups and individuals to get 'actively' involved.
B: Ask for any practical help that people can offer.
C: Get suggestions for potential Black Plaque locations.

I've been thinking about doing 'Red & Black Plaques' for a couple of years! Just goes to show nothing is original i suppose... i was thinking about doing in conjunction with http://libcom.org/history, but thought it could get a fair bit of publicity.

Some places I thought of were private houses, like the angry brigade house in stoke newington.

I thought it would be cool if the plaques *looked* like the blue ones, but where half-red half-black. This would be tricky to make (and the reason why i haven't done anything about it), so maybe some shitter, cheaper version would be better...

welcome to the boards though!

Sounds like a bloody good idea to me, do you think the committee of nine would get into legal trouble if the plaques had libcom.org/history wrote on them? I'm not too clear on what the law is with stuff like this, presumably it's similar to flyposting?

One commemorating the docker's strike might be interesting.

Legally there may be a 'criminal damage' charge as well as flyposting laws.

As for costs, believe it or not I actually might be able to blag an arts grant if I can think of a related project, failing that if we can get enough groups and individuals involved we should be able to do this reasonably cheaply by having a brass plaque mounted on a red & black wooden board - local trophy shops would be able to oblige.

Nah. we couldn't help it if some scoundrels made plaques up and put our address on it...

some could probably be done legally though, especially say on private houses where cool people used to live. Make it sound semi-official when you approach the homeowner and they might be only too happy.

that would be very cool. i have no idea how to do that kinda stuff...

yeah that could work. tho to survive outdoors it'd need to be pretty tough. I think red+black would be better than black cos it'd be much more striking. Also wouldn't get confused with "black history" or somethin.

actually i might know an artist who might be interested in this...

If you know an artist who's capable of replicating the Blue Plaques then that would be really interesting.

You mentioned wanting to do this in conjunction with the libcom/history project, could the 'Red/Black Plaque Project' get it's own space on the libcom site?

This was talked about years ago by Notts Cw, but it never got off the ground. The first one they wanted to do was Percy Toplis, the "Monoculed Mutineer".

Lets hope this time it happens!

Found a supplier of 'authentic' Blue Plaques, they charge over £1,700! Good old prole vinyl might do the job and be weather proof if anyone happens know anyone who works for a sign maker.

Course, you know there are already red plaques - as in the one on Leman Street commemorating Cable Street. The blue ones are for notables while the red ones are political.

Manchester City Council seem to be big on red plaques http://www.manchester.gov.uk/planning/heritage/plaques.htm maybe other councils have similar schemes.

You never know, someone might be able to blag some money for a red and black plaque scheme from some local councils or even from the lottery fund. I believe the images outside of Freedom bookshop were paid for with lottery money.

The National Lottery's 'Awards For Everyone'are notorious for never turning down an application - as long as its worded so that the project is seen to benefit a local community. Why not an anarchist communist community? smile

I know someone who says there's a Kropotkin blue plaque near where he lives.

On the subject of Kropotkin, there was I believe some sort of effort a decade or 2 back to get a plaque put up on his house in Bromley, but hte local council blocked it. I used to have the address - might be able to look it out

Martin

This sounds like fun, might be worth getting some well turned out board members to talk to househoulders.
I volunteer myself and my suit! I've only worn it twice, I'm almost thinking of wearing it for work just to get some use out of it.

No I didn't know about the bus - that is way cool!!!

Yeah like JC I am happy to dress up a bit and chat up/chat round householders - no worries!!! tongue

Well done Jack Common - If it weren't pretty obvious you know what you are doing I would be more than happy to help you draft any funding proposals. I am quite good at telling bureaucrats what they need to hear when the occasion arises! Let me know if you need any help anyways.

Love
