Incredible the lies that they invent

Regardless of that typical Stalinist misrepresentation (which someone has responded to in the messages below the Youtube film clip) - by going to that link I found that there is film of Makhno and his army!

To be honest you'd have to be pretty sad to be drawn to the trots because of their propaganda about Makhno. If what they said about Makhno wasn't true (and it isnt) it would be necessary for them to make it up to justify their attack on the Ukraine.

All the charges against him were replied to by Makhno while he was still alive, it is unfortunate that some anarchists who disagreed with Makhno's ideas did not do more at the time to clear his name.

there were undoubtedly pogroms carried out by makhnovists, but they were generally punished severely, and were overall rare as a result.

i dont know spanish, but something near the end seems to claim that Makhno made an alliance with Grigoriev (which was not true), and that Makhno eventually killed him, not due to Grigoriev's anti-semitism, but to increase the number of his own troops. which is odd, as, when the Makhnovists met with Grigoriev for the purpose of killing him (Makhno wasnt there, iirc - and Grigoriev thought it was to actually make an alliance between the two, or, probably more accurately, to subsume the Makhnovists within his own force), Grigoriev was denounced *specifically* for anti-semitic pogroms before being shot.

Dear Feighnt,
don't know if I misunderstood you, but:
all the sources I have seen claims that Makhno actually was there - some claims he shot Grigoriev personally, others that he "finished him off" (coup de grace), and that the reasons for the killing were Grigoriev's pogromism and counter-revolutionism. Where have you read that he wasn't there?

aah, i apologize, i've misremembered again. at least, concerning Makhno not being there. just checked Skirda's book "Anarchy's Cossack," and, you're right, Makhno was there. Skirda, however, does not say that Makhno shot him, but, rather, a fellow named Chubenko (who was part of the Makhnovists' military staff).

here's the excerpt from page 125, to anyone who's interested:

Quote:
(...) On July 27th, a great meeting in Sentovo drew 20,000 partisans from both camps. Grigoriev was the first to speak; he called for an all-out war against the Bolsheviks and hinted at possible alliance with the Whites. Alexei Chubenko, one of the members of the Makhnovist staff, spoke next and publically damned contacts with the Whites, for the Makhnovists had meanwhile intercepted some Denikinist emissaries and thus had the proof. Next, Chubenko accused Grigoriev of responsibility for pogroms against Jews before closing his address by violently condeming the counter-revolutionary aspect of the activities of "this war lord."

Grigoriev demanded an explanation; the two staffs withdrew to the hall of the local soviet. There Grigoriev made to draw his revolver to shoot Makhno but was beaten to it by Chubenko who gunned him down with a "pocket" revolver concealed in the palm of his hand."

With that proper Makhno video - there's a couple of firefox extensions for copying youtube videos to disk - if someone could grab it that'd be great since judging by the Narita riots vid, youtube isn't reliable for keeping stuf up. I'd do it but I don't have access to my own pc at the moment.

Haven't watched the video but.....

Casas Viejas was an Andalusian village whose CNT branch rose in revolt in January 1933. Two civil guards were killed in the course of the uprising and, after a few hours, assault guards arrived to retake the village. Using torture, they discovered a family implicated in the uprising and a siege soon occurred at their house, in which one assault guard and eight villagers died (two of whom were gunned down trying to escape the house after the Assault Guards had set it on fire). Most of those involved in the uprising fled the village in the face of these superior forces -- including, eventually, those who were in the chumbas (cactus) firing on the troops conducting the siege. Once the siege was over the troops then rounded up 12 campesinos (rural workers and peasants) who had not taken part in the uprising (and so remained in the village) and murdered them to teach the rest "a lesson" (as the leader of the Assault Guards put it).

There's a cool book about it - pretty heartbreaking, they thought they were taking part in a national uprising, but being an isolated village they didn't know it had been called off, and so this little village was left all by itself. Thanks to libcom we no longer run such risks!

Yep, they worked fine - though to play the clip as FLV file I had to then download an FLV player.

You can convert FLVs to MPG/AVI/MOV/whatever else you want really easy with a range of programs. CinemaForge works well if you're using Windows.

Ret, good stuff. We don't have the server resources quite yet for libcomtube, but we can keep a copy of the files ready to go up whenever they get taken down elsewhere, and it's a few minutes work to set up.

georgestapleton, thanks, I think it was mentioned in Bookchin's book on the Spanish Anarchists but couldn't remember details, looks like they filmed it.
