DIY
Why don't people do more DIY things now? Is it all because money has become a thing easily to throw away?
People should start making t shirts, design their own t shirts, make clothes and things like that?
And even complain about buses and cars making this climate get even worse while they still travel 2 miles in their car to work and so on....
What do you thik of the D I Y?
DIY is a silly punk ethos that means little more than not paying bands, not flushing the toilet and rejecting some of the more useful aspects of modern culture (abortions, toiletries, etc.)
It's the same cult-of-self-empowerment stuff people from every counter-culture come out with.
eh. on a personal level, cool, go for it. a friend of mine makes a lot of her own clothes and they come out looking really beautiful and fit a lot more with her than most things you can get in shops.
politically, I could see some benefit if it's done in an organised way, e.g. having people who grow their own food in contact with one another to share what they've got, as a way of saving money. some friends of my parents have an allotment where they grow food and usually give my parents some of it; similarly my dad makes wine and gives it to friends. it helps cement social ties and has some very real economic benefits.
it irritates me that "DIY" has become associated with Crimethinc-esque individualism.
oh, and:
And even complain about buses and cars making this climate get even worse while they still travel 2 miles in their car to work and so on....
1. what does this have to do with DIY?
2. not everybody is young enough, fit enough, or working in the right area to be able to avoid having to drive to work.
I re-wired the gfs shower the other day, without the instructions! Thats some DIY right there!

If people want to make their own, I can't see that there's any political objection to it, though. On the other hand, I don't see it as being particularly radical either.
Self sustenance can be radical on one hand, if you look at reducing waste caused by the market and look to environmental impacts.
Allotments, permaculture, free-cycle and LETS schemes are all virtuous activities, but as singular political acts there not exactly earth shattering.
I know people who can make clothes and stuff, and it's really impressive. Occasionally I'll make my own t shirt design or something. I don't see it as being particularly politically relevant though, and I'm suspicious of attempts to claim a huge significance to it. There's no way I want a future society in which we're all weaving our own pants and making our own furniture.
DIY Zobag owes me a fucking waistcoat!!
I think it was a waistcoat, she definitely said she'd make me something

If only.
DIY's alright really for music, cos it usually means gigs are cheaper and have a more personal attitude. Other than that I'm not fussed. 99.9999999999% of clothes "made at home" make you look like a hippy idiot. I mean, yeah by all means "modify" your clothes a little, but you look like a fucking cunt with a waistcoat made out of your pubes. Prick.
I'm totally into DIY. I'm baking my very own frozen pizza right now. I got it at the store up the street and I drove there on my own. Anarchy rules!!!11
Yr bakking, thats so kool and diy 11!!! Maybe youll op3n up yr own bakery and be a c(A)pitalist scumfuck!!1111 DIY RULEZ!11!!

How true, but only because most people making clothes at home are hippie idiots.
Out of her hair or something?
I hope not, I don't really want a pink waistcoat.
I think the political content of DIY is pretty limited, especially as in north america it is mostly associated with a crimethinc ethos. But for all that, DIY can be great fun. I just made a glob of cheese out of raw milk from a neighbor's cow. Damn stuff just oozes fat, I can't wait until it ages and sharpens.

Poking fun at rural Southerners, I suspect. You know, we're always milking cows, noodling for catfish and the like.
Noodling! I was going to make a noodling quip but I didn't want to egg on any of the inevitable hick-bashing.
I'd like to make my own cheese. I like cheese.

Tis but the barbs of envy. Besides, stereotypes are wonderful time saving devices.
Funny thing is, the only folks i know squeezing raw milk from cow's teats are back to the land hippie types, not necks. The kind of folks in Alan's picture--where is Alan these days, anyway?--buy their milk at Wal-mart like good citizens. Their kids get sick, they go to McDonald's for a Happy Meal, since the burger contains the cheapest mega-dose of antibiotics available in the land of the free.
Edit: added links (just learned how, and I've gone mad with them. DIY dude, anarchy rulz!)
Woah, I actually meant that affectionately. As in, it was kinda cute. The only redneck I ever met was some awesome ex-commie who gave me free weed.
? No offense taken, I'm just carrying on (cutting up, funnin' ya).

It's probably more energy and resource efficient to make T-shirts and most clothing in a factory than making your own. It's called economy of scale. Do you think people should raise their own sheep, shear them, weave the cotton and yarn too? Is that kind of individual economy sustainable for the majority of the population today?
If people want to make their own, I can't see that there's any political objection to it, though. On the other hand, I don't see it as being particularly radical either.
I personally walk to work but I'm fortunate enough to live in a location that allows me to do so. The majority of people do not.
