A couple of my anarchist comrades want to use the hammer and sickle and the red star on our flag. However myself and another comrade are not at all keen on the idea.I was wondering though if there is any evidence that the hammer and sickle was ever used by people other than Bolsheviks/communist party and Marxists.Although even if there was I still think it a bad idea as a symbol for an anarchist branch/federation.
I guess it is supposed to represent the communist aspect of anarchist-communism but personally I think it represents the authoritarian aspest of right-wing communsim.
A couple of my comrades would probably strongly disagree, they would say that the hammer and sickle represents the industrial workers and the peasants to most people it just reminds them of a dictatorship that murdered and oppressed people for the best part of a hundred years.
and it's not like industrial workers and peasants are your target audience... computer monitor and barcode gun anyone?
Not to be obnoxious, but who are these symbols relevant to?
I'm with Joseph k on this one. Other suggestions: a CD burner, a call center headset, a broom.
A spatula for flipping burgers...
Semiotics are a bitch that's for sure.
the spatula and the headset! i wish i had photoshop at work
actually wasn't leninism dismissive of the revolutionary potential of the peasantry? if so that would suggest the sickle if not the hammer/sickle combo originated elsewhere and was then adopted/co-opted by the bolsheviks...
edit: wikipedia says it dates from 1917/18, becoming official in 1922 so actually maybe they just wanted to stress worker-peasant unity once they were in power.

I hope that you still have some creative juices when you're back home and post it here. High enough quality to make a t-shirt would be good. Could be a good as libcom shwag. What ever happened to the libcom t-shirts btw. I still want to wear Anarchy in the Ukraine!

I rekon thats the case. They really liked co-opting slogans, so theiving on a symbol wouldn't be far off. Just to throw in my two sence, I'd dif. suggest not using the hammer/sickle combo. Alota bad memories circulating around the world and so forth...
Yeah, as I say thats how I feel too, it would be kinda like the Tory party using the swastika as their new symbol but ofcourse the tories ARE wankers.
That's brilliant. However if you start using that logo you know what will happen? Some burger flippers in east asia are going to develop some fucked up version of anarchism based on a burger flipper army. Some western students will try and apply this to the west, consistently adapt their politics until they come up with something called euro-anarchism. They will then abandon that, put 'new' before the name of their group and lead government for the next 10 years. Pricks.
That is absolutely brilliant Joseph.
Possible to get a bigger version?
cheers mate
May I suggest we take a leaf from the CPC's book?

There we have it, a logo representing modern industry. Perhaps we add a third one in the centre for the arts (a paint brush?) and it's good to go.
The grain, by the way, could represent the entire food industry. Including burger flipping. The gear could represent technology, which includes CD burning.
And, the maple leaf needs to go too...
absolute fucking genius

Yea, a pretty terrible idea called RAAN appears to have incorporated it. Might wanna think about not letting your comrades see this one.
That RAAN logo is terribly confusing. It just looks like one of those "tribal" tattoos that everyone seems to get.
I think it looks kinda cool.
It's similar to the Crass logo.
That spatula and headset flag is awesome!
Almost looks a little like a skull and crossbones.
sorry double post
i can't see imageshack! can you email it to libcom account?
i was going to make a call centre headset and mouse logo for some office workers thing that didn't materialis...
oh, and don't put a hammer & sickle on anything.
Steven. - check the mod queue
Just for the record, the background on my PC is the now the spatula and headset.
I read somewhere that the hammer n' sickle was originally used by Christian socialists in the US.
Have you seen Angola's flag? They were a Leninist country when the flag was adopted.
It's a neater graphic than the hammer and sicle.
My efforts...
Angola's flag...
DESCRIPTIONAngola's flag was officially adopted on November 11, 1975. The flag has a horizontally divided field with red over black.
A golden star, part of a cog wheel and a machete is centered. That symbol is said to be inspired by the hammer and sickle, and represents industrial and agricultural workers. Yellow is symbolic of the country's mineral wealth, and red and black are said to stand for 'Freedom or Death'.
