James Connolly
Just been going through his old writings from between 1914 and 1916 and found some pure gems.
"Germany has shown a lesson to the world in this respect. That country had the best educated working class in the world, the greatest number of labour papers, daily, weekly, and monthly, the greatest number of parliamentary and local representatives elected on a working class platform, the greatest number of Socialist votes in proportion to the entire population. All this was an index to the high level of intelligence of the German working class, as well as to their strong political and industrial position. This again was an infallible index to the high civilisation of the whole German nation. Germany had builded well upon the sure foundation of an educated self-respecting people. Upon such a foundation Germany laid her progress in peace, and her success in war.Let Ireland learn this lesson. The labour fights the public hears of in Ireland are not signs of mere restlessness – they are the throbbing of the hearts of the worker aspiring after a civilisation that shall make the Irish nation of our time a worthy representative of the free Ireland of the past." Forces of Civilisation (Workers’ Republic, 8 April 1916)
Ireland is in the throes of a new invasion. But whereas all other invasions have been invasions of fighting men, this last invasion is an invasion of men who have declined to fight.Since the passing of the military service law and its coming into force in England this country has been flooded daily with fresh hordes of English and Scotch, who have run away from military service in their own country and settled down like a swarm of locusts upon Ireland.
Here in Ireland we have another kind of dilution of labour. Everywhere since the conscription act was first mooted there has been a rush of Englishmen and Scotsmen to Ireland to escape the military net. These Englishmen and Scotsmen – let us call them Brit-Huns for short – are appearing as if by magic in every sort of job hitherto held by Irishmen. There is not a week and scarcely a day, that goes by without some unfortunate Irishmen being told by his employer that the firm is going to reduce its staff, and that his services are therefore no longer required. He goes, and in a day or two a Brit-Hun appears in his place ... all up and down the city the loyal capitalists are weeding out Irishmen and slyly substituting English and Scots – Brit-Huns – in their places. The Irish are wanted to fight the battles of the tottering British Empire – to set the ‘glorious example’ of dying for the Empire that denies their country the merest shadow of national freedom – and as the Irish will not go willingly they must be starved into going ... It is a new plantation, this time with the blessing and connivance of the Parliamentary leaders of the Irish race at home and abroad. And as the Brit-Huns come in the Irish boys march out in khaki, puzzled, misled, betrayed, the wonder of the world for stupidity, and the despair of their country ... It is the product of crime and folly – of British crime and Irish folly.
Perhaps after he has been here as many years as he has been days he will begin to understand that the instinct of the slave to take sides with whoever is the enemy of his own particular slave-driver is a healthy instinct, and makes for freedom. That every Socialist who knows what he is talking about must be in favour of freedom of the seas, must desire that private property shall be immune from capture at sea during war, must realise that as long as any one nation dominates the water highways of the world neither peace nor free industrial development is possible for the world. If the capitalists of other nations desire the freedom of the seas for selfish reasons of their own that does not affect the matter. Every Socialist anxiously awaits and prays for that full development of the capitalist system which can alone make Socialism possible, but can only come into being by virtue of the efforts of the capitalists inspired by selfish reasons. The German Empire is a homogeneous Empire of self-governing peoples; the British Empire is a heterogeneous collection in which a very small number of self-governing communities connive at the subjugation, by force, of a vast number of despotically ruled subject populations.
We do not wish to be ruled by either empire, but we certainly believe that the first named contains in germ more of the possibilities of freedom and civilisation than the latter.
Therefore on Sunday, 16 April 1916 the green flag of Ireland will be solemnly hoisted over Liberty Hall as the symbol of our faith in freedom, and as a token to all the world that the working class of Dublin stands for the cause of Ireland, and the cause of Ireland is the cause of a separate and distinct nationality. In these days of doubt, despair, and resurgent hope we fling our banner to the breeze, the flag of our fathers, the symbol of our national redemption, the sunburst shining over an Ireland re-born
Brit-Huns? Fucker
Greatest Irish Marxist ever him - he was - honest...
Thanks for adding to my collection of favourite Connolly quotes revol68.
F****in hell, I knew he lost it a bit at the end but I didn't think it was this bad!

I mean the Brit-Huns bit wouldn't have disgraced Blunkett, but this on above is not merely nationalist nonsense it's incorrect nationalist nonsense. Did the Togolese, Cameroonians,Tanganyikans and Ovambo realise they were homogenous and self-governing? To say nothing of the Pacific islanders who were part of the German Empire. Perhaps that's why the German colonial authorities built forts in Namibia and massacred the natives there?

As I understand it the Easter Rising participants had a deal with the Germans that they would rise up at a time when Britain was most deeply involved in fighting the Germans (Verdun) and that if the Irish held out for 3 days the Germans would raise the status of Ireland at any subsequent peace conference.
The rubbish about the German empire may therefore be some tactical sucking up to an ally of convenience?

Which just goes to support the left communist view that all national liberation movements become Pawns in inter-imperialist conflicts.

Would have been helpful if you'd posted the source but I found it via google

The brit-hun thing had me puzzled and is crap but perhaps not as crap as impled.. There is some correspondence on it in a later issue of the Workers Republic in which Connolly replies
"But the people whom we were attacking do sport the loyal colours, and do sing Rule Britannia, and do shout for the war, and are blatant jingoes to a man; they are not Irish refugees returning to the land of their birth, or the land of their fathers. Oh, no, they are boys of the bull-dog breed, publicly and privately asserting that Irishmen should go out to fight for the Empire they will not shed their own blood to defend.
Dublin, Ireland, is rotten with these carrion; our patriotic jingo employers are continually discharging Irishmen and filling up their jobs with English and Scots and Welsh, and these Brit-Huns are neither socialists, radicals, no conscription fellowship members, nor people who believe with us that it is wrong to join the Army. So why does our “Glasgow Reader” get so excited, and indulge in such unworthy insinuations about our “motives”, and ask “whose applause do we hope to gain”, etc. He may be proud of his deftness in making such insinuations; we are willing he should enjoy all the credit of such literary finesse.
...
But because some of the shouters for the war, some of the blatant jingoes and union-jackers came over to Ireland, to help their rulers to depopulate Ireland by grabbing our jobs whilst our brothers are elbowed out to starve or enlist, our critic has nothing but covert insults for us when we dare to criticise them. He criticises the same element in Glasgow; insinuates that we are misleading the Irish workers when we criticise them after they have crossed the channel. So a Scotch jingo in Glasgow is fair game for a socialist writer, but when he crosses to Dublin we have to look upon him as a sacred person – to attack whom is an offence against internationalism. A jingo is a jingo wherever we meet him, and as far as we are concerned there is no close season for jingoes. Nor game preserve in which they may not be hunted."

I was initally puzzled as a percentage of those who took part in the rising (the 'Kimmage men') were precisly men who had fled conscription in Britain.

That probably was the case but it hardly excuses it.
Around Christmas 1915 Pearse said of Connolly “Connolly is most dishonest in his methods. In public he says the war is a war forced on Germany by the Allies. In private he says that the Germans are just as bad as the British, and that we ought ot do the job ourselves. As for writings in his paper, if he wanted to wreck the whole business, he couldn’t go a better way about it. He will never be satisfied until he goads us into action, and then he will think most of us are too moderate, and want to guillotine half of us”
James Connolly ‘A Full life’, Donal Nevin, Gill & Macmillan, 2005, p628

There's no competition at all...........

In California, the Indian Ghadar Movement received a lot of support from the Irish Nationalists. This movement was composed of largely Punjabi Sikhs who had migrated to North America. They were involved in trying to circumvent the racist Canadian immigration controls by hiring a Japanese ship, the Komagatu Maru and making a direct voyage. The Brits mobilised the Royal Navy to drive them back.
Lala Hardayal was very active in this. He had met Guy Aldred in London when Aldred was printing the Indian Sociologist (for which he went to jail). Like Shyamji Krishnavarma, who was behind the Indian Sociologist he was part of Arya Samaj , an organisation dedicated to converting the world to a purified form of hinduism without iconolatry, animal sacrifices, ancestor worship, pilgrimages, priestcraft, temple offerings, the caste system, untouchability orchild marriages. After hanging out on beaches in Martinique and Hawaii, Hardayal decided that this view of Vedic fundamentalism was identical to anarchism and went to San Francisco, where he was active in the IWW and set up the straight-edge Bakunin Institute of California as an anarchist monastery. Following the assassination attempt on Lord Hardinge, the Viceroy of India, he threw himself into the Ghadar movement.
About 8,000 Ghadar militants went to India following the onset of war, with the intention of throwing the British out. The bulk of the membership were ex-soldiers, often agricultural labours but sometimes farm owners. There was an intellectual wing of the party, who were often Hindus rather tha Sikhs who actively collaborated with the German authorities. Hardayal left the US in 1914 after being arrested for his anarchism. He did a runner because he did not want to be handed over to the Brits. He then spent 40 months with Germans and Turks, who it appears really pissed him off (I am trying to track down his pamflet about these times. He ended up retiring from revolutionary politics and returning to his career as a Sanskrit scholar writing about Buddhism.
There was a Hindu-German conspiracy trial in San Francisco which ended up with one of the defendants shooting dead one of the others before himself going down in a hail of bullets. It was a matter of embezzling teh funds.
I add this in because it appears not so many people are familiar with this, and because this discussion of Irish Nationalism and Connolly is better understood by understanding Irish Indian solidarity. Also Fritz Wolfheim, the National Bolshevik in the KAPD was in the IWW branch in San Francisco at the same time as Hardayal.
