The linked article does not say a lot about the meaning of 68, It is more of an attack on the SWP. An attack that does not point out that this organisation is the left wing of capital. 1968 was far to important to reduce to question of the SWP (which in many ways was one of the ruling class's important responses ot 68). 68 was of great historical importance and opened up the last 40 years of struggles, the development of a two generations of revolutionaries and revolutionary organisations, and given two generations of workers invaluable experience.
The real meaning of 68 is going to undergo a massive attack in the coming months as the bourgeoisie seek to reduce it to a question of rioting students and rebellious youth, fashion and music. Thus, it will be important that we discuss its true meaning in order to counter this tidal wave of shit that is going to seek to drown it. Many of the young today are very interested in the meaning of 68: for example during the student struggles in France last year and this year our comrades who were old enough to take part in 68 were sort out by the students and asked what it was like. It is incumbent upon all those seeking to put forwards a revolutionary alternative to capitalism to struggle in the coming months to defend the proletarian nature of 68 and what it means for today, when there is a whole new generation of young proletarians and others seeking an answer to this hell that is capitalism. 68 is inspiring but today cannot simply be compared to then. Today the level of questioning about the nature and future of the system is at a much more profound and realistic level. 68 was spectacular as were the struggles that followed, but today after 40 years of struggles, defeats, advances, retreats, along with mounting wars, economic crisis, mass starvation, ecological destruction the reality of the choice facing humanity, socialism or barbarism is much clearer.
