Introduce yourself! Any London anarcho-communists?
Hi everyone! So, I'm new to libcom and wondering who everybody is. I'm starting at SOAS in September, so I want to get to know any London folks especially. Any advice on sites to visit, groups to join and general introductions to the anarchist movement in London would be great. Thanks.
There's a two Solidarity Federation locals in London (North and South), which have been involved in organising with latin american cleaners at SOAS. you can contact North London SolFed here:
* North London SolFed
PO Box 1681, London N8 7LE
Tel; 07984675281
E-mail; nelsf(at)solfed(dot)org(dot)uk
There's also an Anarchist Federation group, but i'll let someone who knows more about them fill you in.
edit: jack beat me to it
Thanks guys. That was quick! I like these forums already.
Hi Bunny, SOAS is a good uni for radical types. There are moves afoot to set up an Autonomous Students Network this year coming,
I'm also a student coming to London this September for postgrad study. I'm an AFED member so look forward to meeting London chums from there.
Yeah, London AF's contact details are london (at) afed.org.uk and http://www.afed.org.uk/london/
There are moves afoot to get London students together, which isnt as bad as it sounds considering how outward looking some of them are. Might be a good opportunity to have a social and a wider gathering.
Hello - i am new to this site. I'm also a new student in London and would be interested to hear of any organisations around London University.
I'm probably not as clued-up about this end of politics as i should be - i don't know if i would call myself an 'anarchist' per se. Still, i have been browsing these forums for a while - it certainly seems a more attractive approach than joining a front organisation for a political party (eg. 'Revolution', or 'Socialist Appeal' - the Labour Party?)
Thanks.
It might help if you let us know which uni you're at and roughly where you are. For example if you live near lewisham then south london sol fed would be a good contact to make, if you're at Royal Holloway I think there's a poster in a group there.
I met 3 people calling themselves the most "right-wing people at soas" the other day and they were just Tory types; I went to Royal Holloway and there were some real right wing nuts there so SOAS is probably pretty good, and it has a nice pub! I went to school with the VP of SOAS many moons back and he is a slimey creep though.
Go to London Anarchist Bookfair weekend after next

but don't talk to 905 of the people there or visit their stalls.
Fair enough, but which 905?

That was meant to be 90% sorry.
I'd say go and see HSG, SF and the AF then say hi to the ICC on the way to the pub.
We could do a list of approved stalls.
I will go to any stall if jef from the interweb says is cool.

Pity Organise will already have smashed up all their stalls
UCL
I would recommend introducing yourself here but also discovering the politics off the campus. AF and SF are active in london, and there is the usual approved front groups like LCAP you could information from.
hmm it would be good to have an Autonomous Student Network social. We were meant to have one after the bookfair, not sure if anyone managed to in the end, ppl having to leave to get their coaches etc. I like the idea of heading out of london for a change! Wot with all these student actions gearing up, and even the friggin NUS actually deciding fees are going that bit too far, id like to see a more visible ASN, thougn many ppl felt uncomfortable about doing anything under a collective ASN banner...

we had the same problem with the anarchist youth network back in the day - the only people who use the collective name of the things were the small, London centric group which started it in the first place. Most of the others used their small sub collective identities. I think this was due to our collective lack of political agreement.
the usual approved front groups
*sigh* October how many times, the first rule of front groups is that you're not supposed to talk about them. This is also the second rule. The third rule is to do with bringing special brew into meetings so probably not relevant here.
Who are LCAP a front group for, October??

Is it "definitely do it, do it a lot, do it all the time"?

The 2 decent anarchist groups with a London presence are Solidarity Federation (Anarcho-Syndicalist) who have North and South London branches and Anarchist Federation who (I think?) have a unified London branch. Both meet regularly and are full of lovely people who will be more than welcoming.
