Politics is my theme; a particular kind of politics, the sort of politics which lies at the heart of Richard Turner's life and work, which I have chosen to call a politics of emancipation. It is a politics which has never flourished in South Africa — it has rarely enough flourished anywhere — but at crucial moments in the history of our country it has flared briefly and brilliantly, rendering the past transparent and illuminating the future as a horizon of possibilities.
