Over 700 workers staged a wildcat strike Wednesday at a Taiwanese-owned garment company in central Vietnam demanding better payments and welfare.
The Thanh Nien Daily reports that at a mediation meeting later the workers of Quinmax International Company, Thua Thien-Hue province, were not impressed by Taiwanese director Xu Yun Ping’s promise to meet their demands in two weeks.
The workers were complaining that besides paying them a low wage of US$44-47.5 per month, the company was also “harsh and not transparent” in calculating wages. Payments like social and health insurance, New Year bonus, maternity leave allowance were normally made late or not at all.
Nguyen Sinh Son, the company’s labour union leader, said the union had appealed many times to the management but failed to get a reply. The strike is the latest in a wave of workers' unrest in Vietnam:
