A one-day strike has been called for February 13th to protest against government plans to 'reform' public television services.
The strike has been called at France Télévisions (France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5 and RFO). Workers at other public media services such as Radio France and TV5 have been called on to join the strike. The strike has brought together all eight of the media unions (CFDT, CFTC, FO, SNJ, SITR, SNJ-CGT, SNRT-CGT and Sud)
Last Thursday some of the unions at France 2 (CFDT, CGC, CGT, SNJ and SITR) called for strike action from 12:59 to 13h:45, observance was at roughly 30% leading to the cancellation of the 13:00 news broadcast as well as the following programme.
Workers are angry at plans to end advertising on public television, while the plans have been announced enthusiastically how this revenue will be replaced has not. Workers fear redundancies and there have been reports, denied by the government, that France 3 will be privatised. They are demanding assurances on the future of the service in its entirety and of its funding.
