Hey hey
Thought i would write a bit about the Oscars like i did last year and as i am not getting paid or anything, my report will be subjective and incomplete.
Yes, the writers strike was alluded to in that knowing liberal Oscars kinda way. The host, John Stewart, (who he?? i guess he is famous in America..
) said that the main loss now is the Vanity Fair afters party.. which they allegedly cancelled "out of respect for the writers." Stewart joked that they if they wanted to respect the writers they could try inviting a few to the party which i quite liked .."don't worry they won't mingle or anything" . So i kinda liked that. (Obv. Vanity Fair's real reason was a previous history of rank overspending so they have had to cut back their ents budget this year.. my heart bleeds..
)
Javier Hardem got best supporting male as expected and spoke a load of sexy Spanish thanking his mum in that matriarchy worshipping Med. way (without meaning to stereotype!
) Tilda Swinton rather more unexpectedly took supporting female. She is um.. a rather colder character with an interesting personal history.. brilliant actress but i don't think you would wanna mess with her.
Biggest sellout of the night? Two women won for best doc. short film i think..missed the title..the first woman who had a really open wide mouth which freaked me out a bit (shades of Cherie Blair! ) was grateful for the award for her film which evidently was about the prejudice same sex couples face. She instantly then having said this said "Not that i would know! I am a married woman!!. .... I want to thank my husband [you know, the guy with the dick who i fuck/] for caring for our children AND going out to work so i could make this movie. (also patronising men who are comptent...wow he can do two things...) " I mean she is prolly ok and it was just nerves and the film may be good but...
Best animated feature went to Ratatouille which is great! Best speech ref. too about a rat who had a dream.
The five songs nominated for best song were uniformly AWFUL. And badly presented (maybe cos of delays caused by the strike but still)
Best foreign film went to the Austrians for "The Counterfeiters" based on the exploits of a group of counterfeiters in a concentration camp. The French were criticised for being stupid and not entering La Vie En Rose and ending up without even a nomination.
Of most interest to libcommies was the best doc. feature category. This included Moore's "Sicko", and more pertinently, the highly regarded "No End in Sight" as previewed and listed in your TV Guide.
The winner was "Taxi to the Dark Side" about the torture of political prisoners - nice lil politico speech - the doc-maker dedicated the film to a young taxi-driver who was killed and his father, who urged him to make the doc as he was "furious at what had happened to the rule of law." He was an ex Naval interrogator.
Bizarre presentation of the night??? A satellite link to Baghdad where five soldiers read out the nominations for one of the awards and announced the winner - pretty weird. Best jingoism of the night i guess...
Juno got an award for best original screenplay - written by the exotically named Diablo Cody..a rockabilly cum goth who used to be a cage dancer and accepted the award barefoot.
DDL was a shoein as expected and got best male actor for "Blood" and gave some weird speech about a golden sapling springing out of the head of Paul Thomas Anderson.
"No Country" got best film and best directors for the Coen Brothers who should have got it for the brilliantly constructed Fargo.
Ha so the quote in the title of the thread is from the speech given by the best female actor. Thought to be a shoein for the still-luminous Julie Christie, it went to the amazing Marion Cotillard for her performance as Piaf. It is thought it went to her partly because she carried an otherwise flawed and badly constructed film and partly cos the Academy love hot actresses uglifying up for roles eg Charlize in Monster. Slightly patronising reason but from the excerpts i have seeen the plaudit was well deserved.
So there endeth my report...
Did anyone else see teh Oscars?
Wanna agree/disagree?
Love
