Ivory Coast: hospital workers win strike over benefits and bonuses
Workers at the University hospital in Treichville have ended a three-week strike after management agreed a series of concessions.
The strike brought together members of different unions and non-unionised staff. The suspension of the strike was announced after a general meeting held by strikers.
The strikers won bonus pay for handling hazardous materials and some undisclosed improvements in working conditions. They also won the right to free medical care for themselves and their families, including operations.
France: strikes at financial paper Les Echos
Staff at the Daily paper voted to strike for a third time in three weeks after management reneged on promises.
Workers at the paper are concerned about plans by its owner Pearson, to sell it to LMVH. LMVH is currently the owner of La Tribune, Les Echos' less popular rival. Although LMVH is currently trying to sell La Tribune and its head, Bernard Arnault has pledged to sell La Tribune if he does buy Les Echos.

The general assembly had been called by the local of the Congolese Press association (UNPC) to discuss the suspension of the co-ordinator of the local due to financial irregularities.
Argentina: wildcat strike on Buenos Aires Metro
Metro Workers in Buenos Aires launched a 24-hour wildcat strike in protest at an agreement between management and their union.
The strike was virtually 100% observed and shut down the entire network, which is used by over a million people every day. The workers called the strike in protest at the salary increase negotiated by the rail workers' union (UTA). Buenos Aires was chaotic with traffic jams blocking most of the city as hundreds of thousands of people tried to use the roads instead.
Senegal: seven teachers injured by police
The teachers were on the way home from a general meeting that had been held in the state capital Ziguinchor when they were attacked by police.
The teachers who are currently involved in a dispute over pay and conditions had asked for authorisation for a march. This request was denied by the state governor. The teachers met in the town and held a general assembly (AG) they agreed on a protest motion that was to be passed to the governor but he refused to enter into any contact with them.
France: university strikes and occupations against Sarkozy
After the election of Nicolas Sarkozy as President of France there have been successive protests each night, mostly ending in confrontation with the police.
The has been a lot of unrest in France and yesterday; at an general meeting (AG) students at Tolbiac in Paris voted to go on strike and occupy the university. Some 700 of the campus's 10,000 students were present at the AG. It is being reported that some 500 students occupied the buildings overnight.
