Barricades erected and two police stations smashed in Athens over destruction of park by the City Council
After municipal bulldozers demolished one of the rare parks in the city of Athens, locals occupied the area, erected barricades, clashed with riot police forces and smashed two police stations.
On Monday 24th of January at 4 o’ clock in the morning bulldozers of the Municipality of Athens moved to destroy the park of Patision and Kyprou street in the greek capital’s most densely populated department, Kypseli. Cutting down more than 40 trees deemed by the Forestry Department as a natural heritage, the plans of the Athens Mayor is to build a 3 storage underground privately owned parking.

Shots ring out as Athens riots continue
It's been confirmed than police have been shooting at students in Palaio Faliro, a southern suburb of Athens, a writer in the city reports, amid claims that both police and right-wing groups have been on the attack.

In the early morning of Saturday 8 of November 2008, riot police forces (MAT) once again attacked immigrants queuing outside the central immigration office in Athens, Greece, in order to register their asylum papers. In the last attack of the kind two weeks ago one Pakistani man was killed on the spot, whereas two more succumbed to their wounds days later in the hospital.
Unpaid textile workers clash with riot police in Athens
Textile workers from 4 factories of the Lanaras Industry marched in Athens to demand 4 months unpaid wages, delivery of funding promises by the state and recall of 1,200 layoffs. Efforts to enter the Ministry of Economics were met with police repression.
On the 24th of October 2008, textile workers from 4 factories of the Lanaras Industry which are facing immediate close-down in northern Greece marched against the Ministry of Economics in Athens, demanding a recall of 1,200 planned layoffs, immediate payment of 4 months unpaid wages and delivery of the 35m euros to help the factories function again.
Clothing company beating of Bangladeshi workers in Athens met with wildcat collective action
Bangladeshi workers in clothing sweatshop in Athens, Greece, were attacked by company thugs for refusing to work on Sunday. When their co-workers walked out in solidarity, the company fired 120 out of 180 of the working force. In response the workers have sealed the factory off forcing the company to withdraw the lay-offs and negotiate.
On Monday 23 of June 2008 Bangladeshi foremen and thugs in the pay of the “LADY FASHION” clothing sweatshop in Votanikos, Athens, attacked Bangladeshi immigrant workers who had refused to work in the previous day (Sunday being an official day-off in Greece), using iron bars and wooden clubs.
More strikes expected as Greece passes pension reform
Greek unions promise to continue protests against the government's pension reforms, passed on Thursday.
The pension reform raises the retirement age for women to 65 and workers in hazardous industries will have to work an extra two years. Many accuse the conservative government of going back on pre-election promises not to cut pension rights.
Greece heading towards general strike
Greek workers are set to go on general strike tomorrow (Wednesday 19th March) in protest of the government's planned pension reforms.
The government's reforms would mean the merging of pension funds and increasing the pension age for some workers. The government, however, has not made public any details on the size of savings that will accrue from the reforms. The trade unions have also argued that the current pension system could survive if bosses were made to pay their contributions.
