General strike brings Argentina to a standstill
Argentina was brought to a near standstill on Monday amid protests over the killing of a teacher in the south-west of the country last week.
Tens of thousands took to the streets of Buenos Aires and other cities. Schools closed, public transport was halted and banks and many offices shut for a couple of hours. Argentina: Striking teacher killed by police
Fellow strikers blocked roads across the province on Friday and a national general strike has been called for Monday by the teaching unions after a protester was killed by a tear gas grenade.
Carlos Fuentealba,41, was killed on Thursday night after being hit in the head by the gas grenade, fired into a crowd of protesters by police.
India: General strike called after 14 protesters killed.
In the Indian state of West Bengal a general strike was called after 14 protesters were killed on Wednesday. The demonstration was against the creation of a 'special economic zone'* in the region.
Violence erupted when some 4000 police and paramilitary police tried to evict protesters from the village of Nandigram and it's surroundings and to destroy the barricades the villagers had erected to prevent the arrival of state contractors.

Israeli general strike called off as negotiations begin
The public sector strike scheduled to begin Wednesday morning has been postponed indefinitely, Histadrut Chairman Ofer Eini decided Tuesday after meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
During the meeting, Olmert promised to intervene personally in order to expedite the payment of withheld wages to municipal worker employees and to "personally follow the progression."
The strike was meant to protest a delay in the payment of wages to between 7,000 and 8,000 employees of 40 local authorities and 16 religious councils.
Guinean general strike continues as martial law relaxed
Life is slowly returning to relative normality in Guinea now that the government has eased a curfew imposed after nationwide unrest, but the general strike is ongoing.
President Lansana Conte called the curfew on 12 February to curb widespread looting and rioting, which had swept the capital, Conakry, and towns across the country during protests calling for his resignation.
