India: Tea estate lockouts lead to starvation deaths

Assam and Darjeeling tea estate lockouts have led to malnutrition and starvation deaths in India this month.

Roopacherra tea estate in South Assam has been under lockout for nearly month after the executives abandoned it. Leading to the death of a three-year-old girl, Shivani Kalindi and two workers, Yogendra Kalindi, 22, and Manorama Dev, 60, according the workers' panchayat (council). Shivani had been taken to the garden hospital on Tuesday evening, but no doctor was available.

India Toyota workers to launch hunger strike

The Toyota Kirloskar Motor Workers' union yesterday announced that its members will begin hunger strikes today (Monday) to win its demands in the dispute which has escalated over the past three weeks with wildcat strikes and large scale arrests.

The demands include re-instating suspended and sacked employees. The hunger strikes are to being in a staggered way, then continue indefinitely.

A company official told Business Line, a financial news service that no decision has been taken on whether such a deed will attract disciplinary action.

"We are watching the situation," he said.

India: Villagers lock down iron factory

Jamshedpur: Annoyed by the air pollution caused by Sidhi Vinayak Metacom Limited, a sponge iron unit at Chowka under Seraikela-Kharsawan district, villagers from adjoining areas forcefully closed the company on Friday.

Police said the villagers had staged a dharna* in front of the company’s main gate on December 27, 2005, asking the company to install an electrostatic precipitator to control air pollution caused by the exhaust gas of the plant.

Government bans Indian Toyota strike

Bangalore: The State Government has prohibited the workers' strike at Bidadi plant of carmaker Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Ltd. and has referred all issues such as the sacking of three union activists by the management, this subsequent strike by the employees and the lockout to additional labour court for adjudication.

"The order prohibiting the strike was issued by the Principal Secretary (Labour) on Saturday.

India Toyota: 1,000 return to work

Bangalore: Over 1,000 employees affiliated to the Toyota Kirloskar Motor Union today resumed work after tendering a modified version of the 'good conduct declaration' prepared by the management.

The tussle between the management and union over the issue of signing an undertaking was resolved this morning, with the management agreeing to unions proposal of dropping certain references to the `lockout in the undertaking.

India: Manipur state shut down by general strike

Routine life came to a standstill in Manipur following a 16-hour "lightning general strike" called by three students' organisations.

The strike began midnight last night to protest against alleged atrocities on civilians by personnel of 24th Assam Rifles battalion, official reports said.

Markets, shops and business establishments remained closed in response to the general strike while transport services between Manipur and neighbouring states and those within the state were also cancelled, the reports said.

1,300 Toyota employees arrested

1,300 employees at Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), were arrested on Saturday as they gathered at the State Labour Secretary's office after buses failed to pick them up from work.

60 employees attended the TKM plant on Saturday after it was decided to resume talks following a wildcat action and lock-out this week, although TKM claimed 200 employees were back at work.

India Toyota 'good conduct' offer to locked-out wildcats

Toyota said it will end a 12-day lockout at its plant in Bangalore, India if employees sign a 'good conduct' pledge.

The company declared the lockout on January 8 at its plant on the outskirts of Bangalore after unionised employees staged a wildcat strike to protest the dismissal of three colleagues accused of 'indiscipline' - 'union activity' according to the workers.
