I was passing through Stratford one day on my bike when I spotted a man, about 50 years old, putting stickers up on lamp-posts. I went to check them out and discovered they were National Front stickers. In the meantime the man had gone into a little Italian café across the road. I went in too. He was at the counter getting his order.

Newham refuse workers walk out

Around 500 refuse workers in the east London borough of Newham walked out unofficially and spontaneously today over attempts to cut their pay.

The workers received a letter from the Labour-run council on Monday of this week telling them that the “council is having to change some people’s terms and conditions” as part of the single status agreement.

Single status is a government plan which claims to achieve pay parity for all workers regardless of gender and age, but has seen many workers take a pay cut.

12,000 say no to ASDA

Friends of Queen's Market is a campaign in Newham to stop the "redevelopment" of a highly valued local street market into an ASDA.

The campaign has just gone on-line with a new website (still under construction).

libcom.org is pleased to republish this short history of the campaign:

Queen's Market under threat

Queen's Market is under threat from a 'regeneration' project by Newham Council, but a group of campaigners is working to save it.

The 100 year old Queen's Market in London's Newham is a lifeline to local people. Over 150 stalls and shops provide work and affordable food to the area's many low-income residents.
