Doctors' strikes without borders

Medical doctors in Bangladesh, Nigeria and Yemen have walked out this week in rows over pay, conditions and safety.

The New Nation of Bangladesh reported that internee doctors in Barisal launched a wildcat strike on Saturday 3 January, issuing six demands.

Demands included improved safety for workers, better health and sanitation provision and a reduction in the number of visitors to the hospital.

Coca Cola plant goes up in flames

Three persons died and several others were injured when the multi-million naira Coca Cola plant at Eyean, near Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday went up in flames during an explosion that causes extensive damage to the facility.

The development had prompted the management of the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) to suspend operations at the plant.

The dead workers were said to have been taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) morgue while the injured were reportedly receiving treatment.

Workers from Nigeria's two largest unions are planning to launch an indefinite strike from Monday if their demands are not met.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are both calling for the government to reverse policies instigated by former president Olusegun Obasanjo just before he left office.

Nigerians storm oil platforms

Nigeria is one of the world's largest oil exporters

Villagers in Nigeria have stormed and seized three Shell oil platforms in the Niger Delta.

A spokesman for Royal Dutch Shell PLC said the seizures have forced oil production to be shut down at the platforms.

Officials, however, declined to say how much oil had been cut off after the platforms were attacked.
