Against conspiracy theories: Why our activism must be based in reality

The text of a talk given at Occupy Wellington, New Zealand, on October 27 2011. The talk was organised to try to counter the prevalence of conspiracy theories amongst the local wing of the Occupy movement.

Kia ora kotou, thanks everyone for coming. Firstly, a brief run-down of how this workshop will work: first, I'm going to give a brief talk, followed by an open discussion which anyone can contribute to. I also want to make it clear that I'm not here today to debunk or debate any specific conspiracy theory. I've got no interest in doing that, I don't think its particularly productive.

Social democratic anarchists and communist anarchists and the Occupy Movement

Somewhat confused, yet interesting, article on divisions within the #Occupy movement.

A division exists within the leaderless communities at the heart of the Occupy protests. I would describe this as a split between Social Democratic Anarchists and Communist Anarchists. I use these two terms provocatively, knowing that most of those I refer to would not describe themselves as either.

Occupy Oakland and general strike call - updates and discussion

General strike?

Following the violent eviction of Occupy Oakland by police in which Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen was left critically injured, and assembly voted to build for a wildcat general strike on 2 November. Updates and discussion in the comments below.

A couple days ago, the Oakland police forcibly evicted Occupy Oakland with tear gas, flash bang grenades and either rubber, beanbag or wooden bullets (or possibly all three). In the process, a number of people were injured, most seriously an Iraq Veterans of the War member who had gone through 2 tours of Iraq.

Oakland on Strike!

Mike King and George Ciccariello-Maher's account of the two days spanning the forced removal of Occupy Oakland protesters and the general assembly which saw the passing of a proposal for a citywide general strike.

A major victory has been won. For only the second time in Oakland’s recent political history, mass action in the street has forced the hand of city government.

Letter from an anonymous friend: the morning after the attack on the Oakland Commune

An anonymous statement promising that regardless whether the police contest Occupy Oakland's physical space, the conversations, actions and potentials will grow.

We knew that it would happen.

15th October 2011: Birth of a global anti-capitalist movement?

Adam Ford argues that the #Occupy movement represents a historic moment in the fight against austerity.

In my opinion, it is very likely that the historians of the future will look upon yesterday as the day a truly global anti-capitalist movement was born.

For Democracy and Discipline: A Plea to Occupy Melbourne

A Plea to Occupy Melbourne in the days following the cowardly attack of the Victoria Police upon our fair encampment at the order of the princeling, Robert Doyle"

The end of Occupy Melbourne

"Corporate greed," or just plain old capitalism?

It's the mode of production, stupid!

Pamphlet for participants in the "Occupy" aka "99%" movement, explaining why the problem is not "corporate greed," but capitalism, and what is meant by capitalism, crisis, anti-capitalist struggle, and "occupation" in a (libertarian) Marxist sense.

Pdf of illustrated pamphlet for printing here.

To the Occupy movement – the occupiers of Tahrir Square are with you

A letter of solidarity to the #Occupy movement, from activists in Cairo, which also attempts to clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding the Egyptian Revolution in regards to nonviolence.

To all those across the world currently occupying parks, squares and other spaces, your comrades in Cairo are watching you in solidarity. Having received so much advice from you about transitioning to democracy, we thought it's our turn to pass on some advice.
