An underpaying, exploitative restuarant boss in London was forced to pay a foreign kitchen porter his owed wages and also holiday pay when a picket arrived outside his restaurant, backed up by threats of legal action.

Cesare Copeta, an Italian national working seasonally in London, was employed by The Food Room, owners of The French Table restaurant in Surrey and the Tom Ilic restaurant in Battersea, which has been spotted listed in Time Out's Top 50 London restaurants.

Pickets win re-instatement of migrant worker

Following three successful pickets of Delaney’s restaurant in Belfast Dasa Kacova has won all her demands and been offered her job back.

A young Slovakian worker was sacked on the spot from Delaney’s restaurant for asking why she had to remove her jumper at work on a cold January day. Delaney’s owners refused to meet with the worker or with her trade union representative.

Houston janitors take strike across the country

Houston janitors are seeking national support.

The strikers have travelled to Chicago, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Washington to rally support from other janitors, in what the union organisers have called a "national escalation plan".

The Houston strike is entering it's second week, with around 1,700 janitors on strike. They are demanding a wage increase from $5.30 an hour to $8.50, and health insurance from their employers. The janitors are employed by several different companies, and are organised in the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Massachusetts nurses win strike after only five hours

The nurses at Umass Memorial Medical Centre have won the demands of their strike after five hours' picketing.

The nurses walked out on Thursday after negotiations throughout Wednesday night failed to deliver. During the five-hour picket, an agreement was made and the nurses have managed to fight off a series of contract concessions.

Union members stand strong despite legal threats

Thousands of University lecturers continued their strike on Wednesday, despite a court order to return to work.

The lecturers walked out earlier in the week, demanding higher pay and improvements to their working conditions. Sammy Kubasu, the chairman of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), said that "despite the court order, we shall be out of the classrooms until the government comes to the negotiating table".

The second week of industrial action at Hunterston nuclear power station began today. We present this report by one of the striking workers from today's picket line.

The 1st day of our 2nd week of industrial action took place today.

Our picket line was moved to the roundabout on the busy A78. This was under protest from ourselves, AMICUS the union, and the local police force against British Energy, who had threatened legal action against us for protesting on their land.

Ireland: Toy workers' picket over pay

Workers at Hasbro, the toy manufacturer, mounted a lunchtime unofficial picket at the gates of their Waterford plant last week.

On Tuesday 21 February seventy workers, members of the SIPTU union, picketed the facility to demand a pay rise promised in the ' Sustaining Progress' talks in July 2004. Hasbro bosses have since reneged on the deal, insisting that staff must relinquish their seniority before receiving the rises.

UK: Picketing brickies released

Three bricklayers jailed this month for picketing building sites where they'd be refused work have been released.

RTE news reported that Keith Kelly, Billy McClurg and Andrew Clarke told Ms Justice Mary Laffoy today that they would not picket sites operated by Collen Construction.

The three men were previously jailed after refusing to give such an undertaking.

Radical union's picket wins worker back unpaid wages

Members of the Chicago General Membership Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World labour union (IWW) last week picketted and called for a boycott of the Ideal Hand Car Wash in Chicago’s Albany Park neighbourhood.

The managers and owners of the business refused to pay Neil Rysdahl, a longtime member of the IWW, the $227.50 he was owed for over 45 hours of work he preformed for them.
