A Regal struggle in Chengdu, China
About 50 construction workers assembled outside the gate of the “Manhatten” office building in Chengdu, on behalf of over a thousand workers, demanding 30 million yuan in back pay from Chengdu Xinda Real Estate Development Co. (成都鑫达房地产开发有限公司) for 12 months work building the five-star Regal Master Hotel (成都富豪首座酒店), from July 2006 to July 2007.
According to the workers (who wish to remain anonymous), Xinda contracted the hotel’s construction to Chengduo No. 4 Construction Company (成都市第四建筑工程公司), which subcontracted the work to several groups of migrant workers, including this one, whose constituents hail from throughout China, but mostly from various parts of Sichuan. Protests continue in Belfast for sacked Nortel workers
Protests continued today in support of 87 workers sacked with no redundancies at the Nortel plant outside Belfast last March.
Workers and protestors gathered outside the Bedford Street offices of Nortel's administrators, Ernst & Young, in Belfast. Members of Organise! joined the sacked workers as they unfurled banners and handed information lealfets to shoppers and workers in central Belfast.

Hundreds of migrants break out of Italian detention centre
700 migrants have broken down fences and escaped from the Lampedusa detention centre on the Mediterranean island in protest at the conditions there.
The camp was built for 850 detainees but currently houses over 2000. The UN recently urged the Italian government to address the "difficult humanitarian situation." After their escape the migrants converged on the town centre where they staged a protest, shouting "freedom" and "help us." The mayor of described it as Lampedusa "a very tense situation."
Subway picketed in Belfast to support sacked worker
Organise!, WSM, trade unions and various political activists picketed a Subway restaurant in Belfast today in support of sacked Polish worker Natalia Szymanska.
The protest at the Subway restaurant on Great Victoria Street in central Belfast was, despite the poor weather, attended by around 60-70 people, during what should have been the fast-food outlet's busy lunch-hour, all showing their solidarity with Natalia.
Argentina: Rubber bullets and tear gas against municipal workers
Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz, Argentina, May 9th
Municipal workers in Río Gallegos, capital city of Santa Cruz province and home of Argentine president Néstor Kirchner, were attacked by state police while marching to demand payment of a promised wage increase
The march on May 9th was entirely non-violent and was attempting to go to the provincal center of government to register their demands when they were attacked with tear gas, rubber bullets and according to some reports lead shot.
