1978-1979: Winter of Discontent
A short history of the of the widespread strike movement that occurred during the winter of 1978-1979 in Britain. The 'Winter of Discontent' marked the largest stoppage of labour since the 1926 General Strike.
The factors that provoked the widespread stoppage of work by thousands of British workers in the winter of 1978-79 began with the Labour government of James Callaghan's attempt to enforce limits on pay rises to curb inflation. Inflation had reached a height of nearly 26.9% in August 1975.
Israeli bosses demand legal action against general strike
An almost total shutdown of Israeli industry following a general strike has been threatened with legal action after The Manufacturers Association and the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce have asked the National Labour Court to end the strike.
The Manufacturers Association and the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce (FICC) appealed to the National Labor Court Wednesday morning to order an end to the general strike in the public sector called by the Histadrut and to invite all relevant parties to an urgent discussion on the matter. The Association estimated that the strike would cost the economy NIS 500m.
Orange Country refuse strike continues
Temporary workers have been hired to resume refuse collection in several cities across Orange County.
Around 300 workers belonging to the Teamsters union walked out on Monday after negotiations lasting 20 days failed. They are demanding higher wages, better healthcare plans and fairer treatment. The strikers include truck drivers, mechanics, welders and tire men.
Bay Area refuse collectors threaten solidarity strikes
Refuse collection teams threaten secondary strikes in solidarity with landfill site workers.
Around 900 Bay Area refuse collectors could refuse to work from Friday in solidarity with landfill site staff across Alameda County. The landfill workers, who belong to International Longshore and Warehouse Union, deal with garbage from 13 different cities, and garbage truck drivers from the Teamster union have promised to honour the strike.
Newham refuse workers walk out
Around 500 refuse workers in the east London borough of Newham walked out unofficially and spontaneously today over attempts to cut their pay.
The workers received a letter from the Labour-run council on Monday of this week telling them that the “council is having to change some people’s terms and conditions” as part of the single status agreement.
Single status is a government plan which claims to achieve pay parity for all workers regardless of gender and age, but has seen many workers take a pay cut.
The lessons of the bin tax struggle
The opening years of the century saw a mass community based struggle against the shifting of taxation further onto the working class in Dublin. Thousands of households were paid up members of the campaign and tens of thousands refused to pay this new tax over a period of years despite prosecutions, media hysteria and the jailing of over 20 activists.
