A short biography of leading Scottish anarchist Tom Bell, a marine engineer and propagandist who travelled the world, finally settling in the US.

Thomas Hastie Bell was born in Edinburgh in 1867. He should not be confused with another Tom Bell, fellow Scot , Red Clydesider and one of the founders of the Communist Party.

Scotland: sacked workers occupy, blockade factories

Simclar workers with Amicus rep in 2005

Laid-off workers have occupied then blockaded their closed factories in order to prevent asset-stripping by the company, Simclar, and secure improved redundancy terms.

On Friday night (2nd Feb) around 60 workers, members of the trade union community who were protesting outside the Kilwinning site, stormed and occupied the factory. 20 stayed overnight, demanding improved redundancy terms after Monday's announcement that the Kilwinning and Irvine sites were to close with the loss of 420 jobs.

William McDougal

A short biography of Scottish anarchist William C. McDougal, who was active in opposition to the First World War.

Born on the 22nd of January 1891 in the district of Partick in Glasgow, William C. McDougal spent nearly seventy years actively promoting libertarian non-sectarian socialism. He joined the Glasgow Anarchists around the age of nineteen and served as secretary to them holding Sunday meetings at the foot of Buchanan Street.

North Sea oil divers face bully tactics during strike

Divers have faced intimidation by employers

Personal harrassment by managers has been reported by North Sea oil divers who have launched an indefinite strike over pay.

The strike by over 900 divers has entered its third day, and reports have been made that management are harrassing and intimidating workers in a bid to undermine the strike. Workers have been receiving intimidating phone calls at home urging them to return to work and sign individual contracts, a classic tactic used to break solidarity between strikers.

Bus drivers have announced the result of Wednesday's ballot.

Worker's from the T&G voted four to one in favour of strike action over a pay dispute. Drivers at rival company Stagecoach are paid more by £1 an hour. An immediate pay offer has been made, which the workers have now rejected. Further details of any strike action are expected soon.

Meanwhile, Stagecoach drivers in North East England are due to wage a 24hr strike today over pay disputes.

Bus strike vote expected today

Workers voted on strike action yesterday.

Staff at the Raspons transport firm in the Highlands are expected to declare the results of a strike ballot today.

The Transport and General Workers Union said staff at Raspons are unhappy with being paid less than workers at competing firms. An immediate pay offer was made to raise the wages, but T&G are pushing for strike action.

Physiotherapy students protest against unemployment

Qualified Physiotherapists are struggling to find work

Hundreds of physiotherapy students and graduates have converged on Holyrood to lobby MSPs over their "limited chances" of finding employment.

A Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) poll found that four months after graduating, 81% of physiotherapists were still looking for their first job. The CSP claimed that 28,000 patients were currently on a waiting list to see a physiotherapist. The Scottish Executive said a number of recruitment initiatives were under way.

Stirling rejects stock transfer

Council tenants in Stirling have voted by a large majority to reject stock transfer to a not-for-profit company, Housing Stirling.

Despite a massive propaganda campaign by the Scottish Executive, Stirling Council and not-for-profit housing organisation Housing Stirling, tenants have overwhelmingly rejected the transfer of their homes out of council control.
