Minister in attempt to discredit Sorbonne demonstrators

François Goulard, Minister for Universities, visited the Sorbonne at around 2pm this afternoon with its rector Maurice Quénet.

In the photo above, Goulard stands morosely in front of what is in fact just chalked writing on the wall. In his hands are two books which appear to have been damaged.

CRS break Sorbonne occupation

After three days of occupation riot police (CRS) evicted the 400 occupiers of the Sorbonne just before 4am.

Teargas canisters were fired in the halls of the building as in the courtyard young students were struck by truncheon blows whilst non-violently resisting the eviction. Outside the complex, police arrested around 25 of a group of 200 supporters who were still milling around.

Despite being a nationwide revolt of both young workers and students, the mainstream French press has concentrated on events at the Sorbonne University, scene of some infamous rioting in 1968.

Yesterday evening, the Sorbonne, located on the Boulevard Saint Germain, was occupied. This hasn't only happened before, the last time it happened it actually triggered a cultural revolution [May '68 revolts in France].
