France: Security staff wildcat strike at Bordeaux airport

The workers, employed by SGSA Penauill walked out yesterday morning at 6:30 am. All 88 SGSA employees, who make up around 90% of the workforce, joined the wildcat.

The action was in support of a current wage dispute with management. Workers agreed to return to work at 1pm some 29 flights had been delayed by this point.

The BBC reported that all flights in and out of Ryanair's Belgian hub at Charleroi airport were grounded on Friday after security staff walked out in a wildcat strike.

A row over the privatisation of public sector security personnel caused the disruption, which began at dawn and spread to Liege airport in the east.

An estimated 8,000 passengers have been affected by the action so far.

Airlines Flybe and Aurigny were affected by the disruption as flights were grounded for an hour.

Thisisguernsey.com reported on the anger of airport bosses that the surprise action provoked, although for the workers the action rapidly achieved its goals.

Their article stated: AIRPORT security staff who went on strike yesterday have been accused of holding passengers to ransom.

Ireland: Hospital security workers wildcat against job losses

Ireland online reported that the picket outside the Waterford Regional Hospital affected admissions and resulted in planned procedures being cancelled.

The union, SIPTU, said the security workers at the hospital were picketing because their employer, a private company, Sentry Security, lost its contract at the facility.

Possible strikes at Luton, Birmingham and Heathrow

There is also likely to be a ballot on strike action at Luton airport after the Transport and General Workers' Union discovered Polish agency workers were being paid substantially less than British workers at Big Orange Handling - the luggage handlers for Easy Jet.
