Στις 16 Σεπτεμβρίου 1973 δύο ισπανοί επαναστάτες πιάστηκαν από την αστυνομία μετά την επίθεση εναντίον μιας τράπεζας κοντά στα γαλλικά σύνορα. Eπακολούθησε ένα κύμα συλλήψεων στη Bαρκελώνη. Kατά τη διάρκεια μιας από αυτές, στις 24 Σεπτεμβρίου, ένα μέλος της πολιτικής αστυνομίας (BPS) σκοτώθηκε, ενώ ο δράστης του φόνου τραυματίστηκε βαρειά.
