Morocco: An employer sends a squad of bruisers to end a strike

46 members of the UNTM, observing a peaceful strike, subjected to the violence of a gang of thugs recruited by their employer and then arrested by police.

46 employees, members of the UNTM (National union of workers of Morocco) went on strike on 5 October 2007 after exhausting all possibilities of dialogue with their employer, the urban transport company Hanabus, in Kenitra (near Rabat).
Formed by a majority of bus drivers, the strikers observed a sit-in in their vehicles not far from company headquarters while others buses operated normally. The owner of the company, a former president of the town council of Kenitra, recruted a gang of thugs to attack the strikers during the weekend 6th and 7th October. The police force, present on the spot, waited until Sunday, 7 October to intervene. 46 strikers (and 9 of their attackers) were arrested and sent before the courts for occupation of the workplace and aggravated assault.
Two of the trade unionists were kept in detention and only released on Tuesday, 16 October after the case was adjourned at the request of the unions lawyers in order to have sufficient time to prepare their defense. The case will be heard on Tuesday, 23 October at the court in Kenitra.
