OH WOW!

mate that is awesome.

One minor thing tho, there has never been a hyphen. There should be, but there isn't. Its AFED, Afed, or AF.

when did you do that?

I'll stick it on the myspace smile

I can now see that a hyphen might be needed after all, for reasons of health and safety. So careful before removing it.

Quick- everyone write "this is a spoof" underneath those. Someone might think John Snow was in the AF, or that the AF are actually riot cops.

Quote:
CINEMA SYNDICATE - political and activist film

Cinema Syndicate is an Anarchist initiated society that is open to all, the reason being we wanted to actually
offer something to people rather than just expect them to take an interest in our politics. Through film
we aim to skip the banal opening debates about direct democracy, socialism or capitalism and get straight
to what most people know and understand—that we live in an unjust world and it needs to change. So,
rather than have a talk about “socialism and the state” we could show a film about the Miners’ Strike, the
oil industry in Venezuela or a blockbuster like “Syriana” and cut to the chase. Anarchism is not an argument
to be won or a cause to sign up to, it is a process. Our activity is based on what we want to
achieve, and without sounding too pompous, being able to show anything from camcorder documentaries
to a-list smashes for free, fits the bill. At best we can draw links between different issues and themes that
stimulate discussion and debate, at worst we get to watch our favourite films on the big screen gratis.

SHOWING 1 - WE INTERRUPT THIS EMPIRE
Thursday 27th September Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 (Give it a Go Night)
You would be forgiven for thinking America did not have an anti war movement until the US body count started to
soar. This documentary shows the untold story of the movement that tried to stop the invasion from beginning, shutting down the San Francisco financial district in 2003. As well as the protestors, cops and counter-protestors it covers war government profiteering and ethnic profiling at a break neck underground speed.
(Followed by a discussion on the war and anti war movement in the UK - optional)

SHOWING 2 - THIS REVOLUTION
Thursday 4th October Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 FREE ENTRY
Fast paced Hollywood thriller based on the 2004 Republican National Convention protests. A jaded cameraman infiltrates the anarchist’s hell bent on violence, putting his career and relationship under stress… Yes, a Hollywood movie trying to catch some anti-capitalist glamour and get down with the kids. Somewhere this film went badly wrong and they ended up making an immensely watchable propaganda piece for the rioters! With a cameo from Immortal Technique, the Black Block on the streets and Bloc Party on the soundtrack, you can’t really ask for more.

SHOWING 3 - SWIMMING WITH SHARKS
Thursday 11th October Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 FREE ENTRY
This moderately known gem has Kevin Spacey at his best. A blisteringly full on psychological thriller has a young hopeful learning just what it takes to succeed in advertising courtesy of Spacey’s studio president from hell. This is one of the best studies on power and how it effects those who wield it outside of American Psycho.
(Followed by a discussion on the meaning of “Success” - optional)

SHOWING 4 - G8 NIGHT (A Variety of G8 Related shorts and talks)
Thursday 18th October Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 FREE ENTRY
This years G8 protests were the biggest and most intense yet. With films from the summit and talks from anarchists who were there, we will cruise through the who and why, the how and why not of the Summit Hopping phenomenon. Is there a direct link between the privatisation in the UK, starvation in Africa, and clashes on the streets of Germany? Is this the oldest struggle in the world or something entirely new?

SHOWING 5 - THANK YOU FOR SMOKING
Thursday 25th October Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 FREE ENTRY
One the funniest film of the past year, this satire focuses on Big Tobacco’s Mr. Smooth, whose job it is to deflect
the attention from the obvious fact his employers are killing thousands of people every day. How he does this
will having you laughing, how true it is will have you thinking. This is not about cigarettes, this is about every
perfectly legal abuse we suffer and how we are convinced it is our choice. All star cast with William H Macy and Katie Holmes!

SHOWING 6 - THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND
Thursday 1st November Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 (Give it a Go Night)
"Hello, I'm going to read a declaration of a state of war...within the next 14 days we will attack a symbol or institution of American injustice." ~ Bernardine Dohrn In October 1969 hundreds of young people, clad in football helmets and wielding lead pipes, marched through an upscale Chicago shopping district, pummelling parked cars and smashing shop windows in their path. This was the first demonstration of the Weather Underground's "Days of Rage." Outraged by the Vietnam War and racism in America, the organization waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s, bombing the Capitol building, breaking Timothy Leary out of prison, and evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history. This Academy Award winning documentary interviews the remaining activists of this movement today; in the 1960’s they were university students whose government was waging an illegal war.
(Followed by discussion on the use of political violence – optional)

SHOWING 7 - A REVOLT THAT NEVER ENDS
Thursday 8th November Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 FREE ENTRY
Imagine a university professor whose writing and speeches are considered so dangerous that these alone have his European, democratic government sentence him to 20 years in prison. This man is Autonomous Marxist Antonio Negri, one of the most influential modern radicals, openly framed for political motives. Recently filmed on his release, this documentary tells his story and his views on class, struggle and revolution. This is essential viewing.

SHOWING 8 - SIR, NO SIR!
Thursday 15th November Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 (Give it a Go Night)
In the 1960’s an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history. This movement didn’t take place on college campuses, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point. And it spread
throughout the battlefields of Vietnam. By 1971 it had, in the words of one colonel, infested the entire armed services. The hidden story of resistance the last time the US government went to war; they’ve learnt their lessons, it is time we learnt ours.

SHOWINGS 9 –11 - NIGHTMARES SEASON
Thursday 22nd November, Thursday 29th November, Thursday 6th December Arts Tower Lt. 3 7:30 FREE ENTRY
Mini-season dedicated to the most disturbing documentaries of recent years: The Power of Nightmares. Repeatedly aired on BBC2 due its incredible reception, this 3 part series tells the story of the rise of 2 fundamentalists of our era. Worth watching for the soundtrack and editing alone.

Part 1 – Baby Its Cold Outside
‘In the past our governments offered us dreams; now they offer us nightmares’ - The rise of the politics of fear begins in 1949 with two men whose radical ideas would inspire the attack of 9/11 and influence the neo-conservative movement that dominates Washington. Both these men believed that modern liberal freedoms were eroding the bonds that held society together. The two movements they inspired set out, in their different ways, to rescue their societies from this decay.

Part 2 – The Phantom Victory
The two sides meet in Afghanistan to fight the Evil Empire itself, Russia. Long before he became neo-cons greatest enemy, Osama Bin Laden was their ally and a foot soldier of the US. Part 2 sees both their revolutions collapse and beginning of our modern paradigm.

Part 3 - The Shadows in the Cave
Al Qaeda strike, revealing a global conspiracy of fan

atics ready create terror anywhere in the world. Or is there? The concluding part studies the realities of the group and the reasons behind its promotion as an actual global network by the very governments that rely on its terror for power.
(Followed by discussion on Al Qaeda, Islamic Fundamentalism –optional)
