MDF Mtg 22nd August 'Labouring in Vain'

Advance Notice. The next Midlands Discussion Forum meeting will be 2pm til 6pm on Saturday the 22nd of August 2015 upstairs at the 'Rutland Arms' Pub, 86 Brown Street, Sheffield,S1 2BS. a short walk from both the central train and bus station under the title 'Labouring in Vain'.

The Left wing and their followers are wallowing in projects to reclaim, renovate and/or redesign the Labour Party.
Responding to these dead ends, the MDF meeting will recount the real role of Labour as a prop of the capitalist system for the last 100 years and will reject the left's prescriptions for hopeless searches for a non-existent golden age of Labourism. We will argue the need for developing a politics rooted in the independent self-organisation of the international working class.

If you are sympathetic to that conclusion but want to both reinforce the argument and discuss what that may mean in practice or alternatively put an opposing view you are encouraged to come along.

A couple of warm-up preliminary reading links are here;

and indirectly related is this: http://libcom.org/history/abyss-opens-rise-fall-keynesianism-john-hollow...

May add more later.

This video recording of a presentation by three speakers on the Future of the Labour Party given at an old discussion forum run by the former Commune Group is well worth viewing, especially the two contributions by David Bailey and Chris Ford, but it includes a rather downbeat contribution by Andrew Fisher for the Labour Representation Committee who, if he is still around, must be feeling a bit perkier with the advance of Jeremy Corbyn in the current LP leadership elections, though little seems to have changed otherwise. See here:

A good warm-up for our own MDF discussion.

So just to add to all the current fun around the current Labour Party leadership election it seems Jeremy Corbyn wants to reinstate or re-write the old LP clause 4 to emphasise public ownership and Jim Murphy wants a re-write to emphasis the Scottish national interest!!

So I can't resist recommending an earlier but equally relevant criticism here;

Not to detract from the other linked articles above but this short contribution from the AF is a useful counterbalance to some of the daft 'Corbo-futurism' stuff emanating from the trendy Left:

And this short contribution by our missing comrade:

More than enough in all these linked items I think. Hopefully together they will be of interest even if not everyone can make it to the MDF meeting in Sheffield on this subject.

Although this meeting is past now I thought it worth adding to our links here the Tampa Text on the Bernie Sanders campaign in the USA which bears perhaps an even greater resemblance to the UK Labour Party Election campaign of Jeremy Corbyn than the SYRIZA experience in Greece.

Not to detract from a forthcomming London AF meeting around this subject but for those interested there is an audio recording of our MDF meeting available via this website www.freecommunism.org
though of variable sound quality and our usual 'off the cuff' discussion quality!
