media portrayal of social movements

This is for a friend really, but does anyone have any good recommendations, preferably moderately recently produced ones on this subject? Decent* journal articles would be alright aswell.

*not weird activist ones screaming about indymedia

I have just done my socio cw on this. You need to read 'Political Communication in action' which is a collection of essays edited by D.L Paletz, you have to get it from off amazon or the net, but ill send you the book to borrow if you want, its got a great article in there about how the media can destroy social and political movements.

The work done by Glasgow University Media Group on the miners strike is good, and you could probably pick up a glasgow university reader from a library, it will definitely be there if you go to uni or college in the sociology or media section.

Also, your friend will need to read Gramsci and his ideas on Hegemony, but for more up to date theory on hegemony you need to look at stuart Hall and his ideas of cultural hegemony.

Also, ownership and control of teh media is important and the best short book i read on that was by noam chomsky and it was called 'media control the unbeleivable success of propaghanda' i think. confused

Is it for college or uni? Because i can definately get shit loads of more books, articles and sites which discuss this if you want?

Here's an article about the (mis)representation of the anti-CJB protests in 1996 -- hte printed version also has bits from the papers in question, but I think it should still be interesting.
