Can someone do a text-only version of that logo - opacity white text like it is, just without the star. Transparent png.

Then I'll have a go at alternative layout with the columns and we can work out what to do with the star later.

Not at home so cant do.

Ok we can cut down whitespace and I will do a smaller graphic.

Im 100% against full page tho. Whitespace down the sides makes articles so much easier to read. At least 5% border on left and right i think.

What about if we just left right column big and just kill the white space?

i mean serious that white space might look nice on a massive screen but it's a total waste. i can't think of any big sites which just leave a big gap like that (only alasbarricadas).

and these ones:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/
http://www.msn.com/
http://www.guardian.co.uk/
http://independent.co.uk/

nice try catch, none of them are comparable though because in all of them the space is optional. MSN and grauniad it's stretchy as the site's centred and the others it's on the right cos they're all fixed-width.

I still want a bit of white space down the left though - but it could easily be half. I really like the right block this width though (assuming we can get no over-spill at 800x600) - with the sectors/regions - thumbnail lists it'll look amazing

yeah totally - that's why we should sacrifice the empty space on the left for it catch. think of the thumbnailed feeds!! if anything's gonne get people clicking on other content when they get here it'll be that...

going alright.

What I've done is this:

can't get h1 to work in header - so we just need a logo which includes text and image and will fit within the space - I reckon the same general thing has we had, but just made to fit would be great. logo path is defined in theme configuration now.

Removed all reference to the big star in page.tpl.php

whitespace is done like this:

default zen layout.css has

#main
width 100%

changed that to

width 95%
margin-left 4%

that's pretty much it.

yeah i saw you snuck the white space back in cos it disappeared for a bit. you think that much is necessary? i reckon a half to a third of it would be sufficient - matching the space between the main block and right column for example.

I think it's good to have it - especially when you scroll down and don't have right block to balance the left content.

My screen's really big though...

Will leave like that, wait for rkn.

Yeah thats cool gunna do some things:

- Going to change the logo to more like the last one but to fit. See how it looks
- Then there needs to be equal whitespace on left and right of the page, I reckon about 70% of what is on the left at the moment. also this needs to apply to the top bar.
- At the moment breadcrumbs are less indented than main content - dont think that should stay

made logo a bit bigger, if u dont like the little bit of bleed onto the white i will change but i think its cool. Put a margin on it.

catch - u took nearly all the properties for it out of the css file? How is the url area in the logo defined? I cant figure it out sad Cos it wrongly aligned now

Not understanding layout.css.

There doesnt seem to be a property to alter which will adjust width for all the content on the page. eg: main and breadcrumbs margin is aligned separately - so now breadcrumbs has margin-left 50px, and main has: none. Which i dont think is the right way to do is but it looks right.

Now want to get same whitespace on the right hand side of the page, and also apply to the header

Yeah it only overlaps home tho atm which doesnt really matter i dont think as its the same link - when it gets moved right a bit then i reckon it will be in the white space

I like how it looks.

Took properties out to avoid confusing (and confliction) - it's just standard drupal logo method now - image with a link around it.

Agree about breadcrumbs - all I did was move them from right over in the middle of page.

So you want full white space right and left? OK I dunno how to do that - might have to put padding on body or #page or something.

ok logo validates now (which it didn't before),

but I sloppily coded the sectors box so need to clean up.

Also one news article is missing a p tag or something.

Then we'll be xhtml 1.0 strict!

I have a quick suggestion for the regions image that would effectively cut out a "middle-man" page. Instead of clicking on an entire map of the world and then going to a page where you select a region, have areas within the image link to those specific tags.

One more fairly simple thing, regarding the top menu...

The "m" on "My Account" is upper-case, while the "m" on "my inbox," and the first letters of the rest of the menu choices, is lower case.

yeah, thats the plan, but when we put in the html to do it it didn't work, so we have to figure it out. but that's what we want ...

techier libcomists than i inform me, that for complicated technical reasons, changing that one letter to lower case is "a right bitch" sad

should be ok in IE7, but we decided it was too much work to fix it for IE6, as by the time we had no-one would be using it. but yeah firefox is the best at doing what the code tells it too tongue

Apologies if this has been posted already, I haven't read the whole thread.
Using firefox latest version on 600x800monitor, windows xp - the test of the threads is only taking up the left hand half of the page, the right hand size overlaps pretty badly and when text is resized (to a size or two larger) it is really bad, not quite unusable but really frustrating hence my lack of activity on here lately. Thought it better to point out rather than sulking and going away smile

it would be very cool if we could have, as well as alt/title tags on images uploaded with articles a caption box underneath that put the alt tag in say small italic or just small text below the pic?
