Your opinions please: External links which open in new windows

Im just trying to gauge people's opinion on this - do you like websites which have it automatically set so all links to external websites to open in a new window (tab)?

Personally I'm all for this, because i dont always check the status bar to see if a link is on the same domain and if i am just scanning a page i like to be able to click a bunch of links open some new windows and carry on reading the original page.

However among web coders there seems to be a rather strong consensus that we shouldnt code websites to automatically in new windows, instead the user should be in control. The arguement goes that all browsers allow users to hit a 'modifying' key (ctrl in firefox) or use a context menu (right click) to open in a new tab/window and therefore we shouldnt force people to do anything.

So what do you think?

i think set external links to open in a new window. i mean web-coders are tech savy and have no problem right-clicking/using firefox + tabs etc, but not everyone uses them, and people can always close the original window if they do want to leave ...

its a basic usability issue for everyone apart from internet power users. If you are within an authenticated content and click on a link which takes you outside of that link most users would not know how to get back to the original authenticated area (as in forum where they are logged in) if the link didn't open in a new window. Thats, i think, what differentiates forums and portals from norml web pages with links to external sites.

I like new windows, cause you read the link and then close it and have to open a new window to get libcom back.

I also like the new tabs and am aware that it's a no-no to code that way, but if some of us hate it that much, maybe there's a way to force links to open in same tab or window.
