Imo, quality rather than quantity is key; I don't see any need to report every run-of-the-mill strike for the sake of it. Maybe a formularised template for basic listing of them - but I think moving towards more in-depth analysis is in the long-term more useful/informative for grasping what's going on than simple listings. My view, anyway.

We should probably look at getting a news aggregator back in after upgrade - then we'd be able to have a feed (possibly slightly moderated if we're lucky) on the news index somewhere which'd both save some reposts, and also provide a good source for some articles as well. It'd also be good to get a distinction between short updates and features - it's not quite there yet.

not really got time to write something proper but I generally don't like the news rejig. Not really keen on the alternating headlines (the ones that fade in and out I mean) and how there's lots of white space on the page now. Much preferred the one big feature pic, plus two smaller headlines and then the last ten or so headlines with the country next to them. How come it got changed?

BBC has scrolling text: http://news.bbc.co.uk/
Apple has fade in/out: http://www.apple.com/
Guardian has a scroller: http://www.guardian.co.uk/

I'm easy, found js that does both. This was a very quick hack up but it'd be a good excercise to try to get them both going and see how they look.

Ed, I can't believe you don't like it! Basically the older one always ended up with duplicate stories, and good stuff dropped off the page too quick. Now it doesn't. It needs some different kinds of browsing though but not sure how to do that yet.

scrolling would be better cos fading makes the whole column blocks jump up and down it it's one or 2 line...

Can someone explain what the new options beside the 'put this in moderation' button do?

I didn't know there was a "put this in moderation button" at all. Do you mean the revisions stuff?

Published
Promoted to front page
Sticky at top of lists
Create new revision
New revisions in moderation
In moderation queue

I uncheck sticky and in moderation queue. I unchecked new revisions in moderation when I was trying to correct the spelling of Belgium embarrassed but someone beat me to it.

sticky should never be used.
front page - only unset it if it's shit, or if you need to temporarily hide it from most listings. Otherwise leave it on.
create new revision - unset this if you're editing your own stuff, or anything else minor.
New revisions in moderation - unset this as well.
In moderation queue - again, unset it, unless you want to temporarily hide a post while you're working on it.

Oh and that was me wink

always a step ahead

so with the front page one does that mean that it won't go to the front page at all or just won't be the one with the picture? (like with the little duracell story I did after the big strike roundup.
There's so much going on and I had to waste a day in work sad

The one with the picture is defined by a link next to "e-mail this page" etc. - do you see that link? Basically if you hit the link, it puts the article into a queue of one, and knocks whatever's in there out. So only one feature at any one time.

whoops. try now.
edit: so next to where the e-mail link should be, do you also get a "feature" link? (this will only show on news)
