Yeah there is a great pamphlet. I think its just called The Battle of Cable Street by the Cable Street memorial group or something. Its A5 size I think. You can get it in the Eastside Bookshop on Brick Lane if you are in London. I meant to type the pamphlet up or summarise it for a history article at one point but never got round to it. If i find it again I will post some info.

Theres a good pic of the mural here. Wikipedia has some links, including this vid from the day.

Thanks,

I'm doing my LC history project on it. Need to find some sources that aren't just weblinks.

libcom?!!?

Check this as well: http://libcom.org/forums/history/east-end-jewish-radicals-1875-1914 Oh and the Eastside bookshop has a pretty good local history section which might have more stuff of use, way better than Freedom i'm sad to say.

Oh and have a look for Remembering Cable Street : fascism and anti-fascism in British society / edited by Tony Kushner and Nadia Valman. That may be good.

edit// here we go - the pamphlet i talked about in my first post - the Cable Street Group were the people who published it. Memory prompted by this. There's an email address on that pic. Also check out the Whitechapel Library ('Idea Store').

albert meltzer had a short little section giving an account of Cable Street, you can see here, under the "The Battle of Cable Street" section down the page:

http://www.spunk.org/library/writers/meltzer/sp001591/angels2.html

as you can see, it's, er, a pretty glib account tongue not sure if it's extremely accurate, but there you have it.

I read this back when it originally came out in 1977. Joe was in the CPGB at the time. I remember it being a detailed account. Perhaps my memory is off. Joe later broke with the CP and moved towards a libertaian socialist viewpoint of some sorts.

Small point really but Joe was briefly a member of the London Solidarity Group before falling out with them over some issue which I can't remember now.

He became a sponti.
He had more rabbit than Sainsbury's too!! Smokey Joe we used to call him!
He had a sidekick called Arnold Feldman who seemed to be asleep most of the time. They'd both been in the Steopney branch of the CP and had both left about the same time. They died within a week of each other.

You'll all be glad to know i got 85% on my Summer History Exam for my essay on the Battle. However, i lost quite a few marks because out of 3 sources i had to name, 2 were from the internet. I need a book or pamphlet. : /

There's a bit in Albert Meltzer's I couldn't paint golden angels if I'm correct. There's a copy of that in the WSM library. Also Alan might have something it'd be worth asking him, also ask jackwhite and dzigaf.
