mid/early 90's anarchist debtor stuntists

my big sister used to read The Face in the 90's and i used to look at the pictures, it was brilliant.

Either then, or later when i found some old copies, there was an article on a group of anarchists who said they came from the traditional discipline, had got bored with it and were instead running up huge debts with different loans and credit cards then fucking off to try and roger the economy.

1) WTF!

2) does anybody know anything about this? It was the 90's, so them saying they came from 'traditional' anarchism may well mean they lived in a tree and had hair cancer for a couple of months.

Ha great idea!

If you could get everyone to do that it'd be awesome.

Oh, if it was just a stunt/gag it would be amusing. I didin't realise they were serious.

Like some anarchists that got mentioned on channel 4 who tried to get everyone during the miners strike to put the kettles on at 6pm to crash the national grid sounds like...

[edit - Re: Revol]

so they exist. Hmmm.

Where did you read this then?

I don't think it sounded like a good plan, i just wanted to know what happened to them; they were in the early stages of debt and they were building it up, they hoped, to millions.

They used to call themselves something like Decadent Action. I think it was only a handful of people who turned up at the Criminal Justice Bill marches in evening dress swigging champagne (or more likely cheap cava, the pikeys).

At the time I remember thinking that it was something to do with Stewart Home, but I don't think there was any evidence for that.

What a shite topic for a first post...

I remember that one! It wasn't anarchists though, it was just one of those things that people sympathetic to the miners did at the time. Because of the 6.00pm power surge, it wasn't a particularly wild thing to encourage.

Mind you, the early 80s Stoke and Trent group, Careless Talk's claim to fame was during the water workers strike. We leafletted advising people to wash the car, wash the dog, flush the bog, run an extra bath, etc, etc, and made the front page of the Evening Sentinel with union leaders literally stepping over each other to denounce them bloody anarchists grin

tbh you have answered the question explicitly - which is worth a million angry broadsides about dead men w/ beards.

A good first post imo smile

Any moe on them? What happened in the end?

You think they actually did run up the debts? It was situ-style stuntism, trying to get people to hpne in sick, that kind of thing. They always used false names and prob didn't even have credit cards.

I don't fucking know do i thats why i posted the thread darling smile

Praps you could just quickly say what u know about them rather than just vaguely sarking at me.

So:
- they never did run up any debts, they lied to The Face.

- it was primarily a media stunt aimed at critiquing capitalism, not an idea for wider use. 'Awareness raising', tho i'm sure it would upset them as situationists to be seen like that.

I don't know for sure either, but tbh anarchists lying to journos sounds like the most credible explanation to the debts question.

That's all.

No i'm not going to bother, suffice to say, if only we could be as popular as you.

I should have sung for smiths too sad

I suspect some of the old fogies will remember, apologies for doubling up posts i just scanned the thread, boss is about.

They did electric pink "phone in sick" stickers, and put a callout for a national phone in sick day in April, can't remember the exact day/date.
I seem to remember something about them on the news...

And what you've already said, tacks, and the fogies.
