Funniest thing you read today

Submitted by snipfool on June 5, 2012

The funniest thing I read today was Laura Barnett's piece hailing royal succession gender equality as a victory for feminism.

What was the funniest thing you read today?

BEIJING - An article by Xi Jinping on dialectical materialism will be published on Qiushi Journal, a flagship magazine of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

The article will appear in the first issue of the new version of the journal in 2019.

The Party should be constantly nourished by the wisdom of Marxism philosophy and apply dialectical materialism and methodology in order to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation, said the article by Xi, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

He stressed adherence to formulating policies based on reality, proactively facing and resolving conflicts, enhancing skills to cope with complex situations and problems, and unceasingly promoting theoretical innovations.

Red Guards Austin attack WWP/PSL:

Workers World Party (WWP) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) attempted to hold a protest at the intersection of East Riverside Drive and South Pleasant Valley in Southeast Austin this past Saturday. But the area is home to revolutionary forces, the enemies of revisionists. Masked militants descended on the revisionist protestors almost immediately.

For some time now a raft of evidence has suggested that the prospect of Brexit is leading to a rise in wages. New research from LinkedIn, released today (Monday 13 May) indicates that conditions of work may be improving too.

LinkedIn’s survey found that three-quarters of recruitment companies have seen a rise in the number of businesses looking to find staff from within Britain. The trend coincides with a reduction in the number of jobseekers in the EU looking for work in Britain.

Definitely one of the stranger mainstream media articles on anarchism I've seen.

Enough With Crumbs, I want the Cake, by Mona Eltahawy: Power is anarchy. It dismantles patriarchal social structures and allows us to rebuild them with equity at their foundation.

I wanted the boy and the two girls sitting with his family to know that women could be presidents and leaders. Much as with ambition, you need to see what you want to become. Egypt once had a queen called Hatshepsut who ruled for more than 20 years during the 15th century B.C. She was, for a time, the most powerful person in the ancient world. But I wanted someone who was still alive to point to as a reminder that women could be powerful.

Had there been more time, I would have told those children that power is more complicated than presidents and chancellors. That power lives in more places than the presidential office. That there is a difference between power wielded in service of a few and power wielded in service of all.

In the intervening years, two of those countries that were led by women during the 2014 World Cup have served as reminders that when it comes to patriarchy and power, the truth is much more complicated than simply asking “Can a woman be president?” We must ask equally pertinent questions: Is that woman feminist? Is she invested in dismantling patriarchy? Will she use her power to uphold or diminish patriarchy? Both Brazil and Germany have given us complicated answers.

Speaking of right-wing trolls – I've been flipping through Michael Heinrich's new biography of Marx (recently uploaded to the Libcom library), and apparently, Ludwig Feuerbach wrote this back in 1839:

Feuerbach

Fantasy is the subjective intellectual activity that depicts things as they correspond to feeling; reason is the objective intellectual activity that depicts things as they are, without regard for the needs of feeling

Sounds an awful lot like "facts don't care about your feelings". Is Ben Shapiro a young Hegelian?!

Got sucked into reading some election coverage on Vice and this quite tickled me:

Here, we profile the other electoral tribes whose vote could swing this knife-edge election...

RELUCTANT LABOUR-VOTING ANARCHIST

Will spend the first half of the campaign being disappointed at the Labour party for not being pro-migrant and anti-police, before coming round to the idea that five more years of Tory rule will make things materially worse. Eventually, they will allow themselves to post one ironic pro-Corbyn meme the day before the party pledges to equip every police officer and border guard with a taser.

Quietly votes Labour in the end with the same 'oh well, fuck it' attitude as impulse-buying an expensive coat. After all, a four-day week and eased property legislation might mean more squat parties. Will end up hating the Labour party all the more in the long run, whatever the outcome.

Noah Fence

I actually saw a comment on Facebook stating that if you didn’t vote Labour in the forthcoming election you couldn’t seriously consider yourself an anarchist!
One deeply impressive attribute of the Corbyn supporter is their ability to repeatedly swerve questions pertaining to the attacks on the homeless and social cleansing policies of Labour councils! Ask once they’ll ignore it, another two or three times and they’ll do the same. Around the fifth time they’ll accuse you of privilege or or having no knowledge of how it is to be sick or poor(which is hilarious consider my experiences) and by the sixth or seventh you get called a boomer and banned from the group!
Amazingly, this is just as likely to happen on an anarchist group as a liberal one. Fucking hell.

In Defense of Kenny G (Jacobin)

With the 1 percent’s abandonment of its traditional patronage role, it should be obvious to us more than ever that our prospects are intrinsically connected to the 99 percent. At the same time, it should also be apparent that many of the barriers preventing the kind of multi-class alliance we need are of our own creation. Our reflexive tendency to consign to “a basket of deplorables” those whose tastes, musical and otherwise, and cultural sensibilities fail to comport with the arbitrary dictates of educated elites is one of the most conspicuous of these.

Breaking this unattractive habit doesn’t require that we take any great pleasure in listening to Kenny G. Rather, all that is necessary when interacting with those who do is to remember the old kindergarten adage that one should either say something nice or nothing at all.

If we are to take seriously our goal of developing a social base for a mass left politics, that is a sacrifice we should all be willing to make. Joining the millions of others already floating their cares away to the cool, smooth tones of Kenny Gorelick might not be everyone’s idea of a socialist utopia, but it’s pretty easy to imagine a lot worse.

Before we can get to the funny, here's the (very unfunny) OP for context

https://reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/emlovi/facebook_is_forcing_its_moderators_to_log_every/

Facebook Is Forcing Its Moderators to Log Every Second of Their Days — Even in the Bathroom: “People have to clock in and clock out even when going to the toilet and explain the reason why they were delayed, which is embarrassing and humiliating.”

Now here's the good stuff. This is the top comment on the post:

DendroNate

Used to work for a company who did this. The staff rebelled by taking it way overboard and clocking out for every tiny thing. Stuff like "Dropped pen. Picking it up." Or "Couldn't find glasses. Realised they were on my head."

Once the management realised that they had to wade through all this tedious crap and didn't have time to do much else, they soon swept the whole idea under the rug.

Also this reply comment

S_Nickels

This was an event that happened. Props to Kliman btw for challenging Rick (and other Stalin apologists) on there having been socialist countries.

https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/alternatives-to-capital/video-boots-riley-andrew-kliman-and-rick-wolff-debate-morality-of-stalinism-and-western-capitalism.html

Kliman vigorously condemned the crimes of Stalinism and “leftist” support and apologetics for them, saying that they have besmirched the cause of genuine socialism, setting it back decades–if not permanently. Riley said that “mistakes” had been made, but he refrained from condemning Stalinist regimes. Wolff also refrained from even the slightest condemnation of them, attacked Kliman personally, and alleged that leftist opponents of Stalinism had done the most harm to the cause of socialism (presumably more than Pol Pot’s killing fields, the crushing of the Hungarian Revolution, etc., etc.). A fourth speaker, graduate student Bennett Shoop, also put forward a pro-Stalinist line.

One of the news personalities was fiddling with those large interactive screens displaying all sorts of data. He was breaking down for the viewers some state district by district to preview a Democratic primary and how votes may be distributed among the candidates. He casually employed the term "gritty" as an adjective for the working class, presumably Sander's support base.

This article on the Irish cement strike has a bunch of great sections like this:

(It is also perhaps true to say that the fact that one of the defendants, who had several previous convictions, had skipped bail, with our prior knowledge, and hadn't helped matters by ringing up Walmsiey, a judge whom he knew of old, on the morning, of the trial and giving his name. "Why aren't you in court this morning?" asked RM Albert. "You have to catch me first, motherfucker" was the rejoinder, which, however apposite. may not have done his co-defendants any good.)

From a Facebook Anarchist-Communist group...

So as an anarcho capitalist I understand that it’s not only moral, but is also absolutely natural that I live as an entirely independent being. I rely on nobody in any way shape or form. I am capable, I am strong, I need nobody else.
I did not need some false ideology like all you socialists, as I say, my philosophy comes straight from nature. And so, the moment I was born, I told my mom to keep her fucking commie titties to herself and started to drink from my own.
I now only eat food I grew myself on land that I worked with tools I made myself with metal I forged myself from the raw materials I mined myself.
I drive a car a built myself powered by fuel I refined from oil that I dug for and struck for myself. Obviously I only drive on roads I laid myself so if I’m going somewhere new I lay ten feet of road, drive to the edge, get out of my car and lay another ten feet of road and so on. Takes a long ass time to get anywhere but it sure beats being a weak ass, soy girl commie cucktard like all you so called ‘anarchists’ on this page.
I only came on this World Wide Web so I could tell you snowflake commies how pathetic you are but I’m getting off it now. I don’t need this shit, I’m gonna build my own.

Amazingly, a number of people took this seriously and took the time to deconstruct the author’s position!

...
http://libcom.org/library/great-irish-cement-strike-1970-fe-3-c-cement

This bit was mint too:

The destruction of 27 lorries by person or persons unknown ended the lorry running from Armagh, but the habit had spread unfortunately to Newry where five cement loads were destroyed. Here it is true to say that it was perhaps more due to the zeal of the Newry fire brigade who were summoned on several occasions to parked cement lorries which were, they were informed by local bystanders, on fire. In vain did the drivers protest that this was not so and that the token fire had been extinguished.

The stern-faced and diligent Newry fire brigade, all union members, solemnly hosed down five loads of cement, inadvertently destroying them, but doubtless saving the town from a mighty conflagration.

It's a very niche genre, but for those who have fond memories of Charlottesville organizer Jason Kessler getting yelled at by his dad in the middle of doing a video, a new competitor has appeared:

During the livestream, he drove back to his mother’s house, anticipating a law enforcement presence, asking for “a couple of close buddies [to] pop over to my house in case shit happens, we can have EVAC set up and all that…. I ain’t gonna be caught lacking for exercising my Second Amendment rights. If they want to fucking fight, we can fucking fight.”

“My mom does not like this shit at all. She’s probably going to be really fucking pissed off,” he added... During the livestream, he set the phone down outside his mother’s house, but viewers could hear the conversation inside.

“What the fuck are you doing?” his mother yelled at him as soon as he entered the door. “Maybe because you’re posting stupid fucking shit on Facebook."

Just need a few more before we can compile the "top 10 fascists accidentally broadcasting themselves getting told off by their parents".

He is an incredible speaker, which confused me the first time I saw him speak because how he said things were so much better than what he said; I thought I wasn't hearing things properly, but then I realized that is was Wolff speaking...

Not so sure he's pushing people to the left. In the places I've seen him speak, the effect of his talks would be to push people to the right.

While we're on the topic of the struggle of some academics to research what they're talking about, here's a college-level economics textbook by Greg Mankiw:

Throughout his tenure, Mugabe’s economic philosophy was Marxist, and one of his goals was to redistribute wealth.

Marx predicted that the return to capital would decline over time and that this would lead to economic and political crisis. Economic history has not supported Marx’s prediction, which partly explains why we now study Solow’s theory of growth rather than Marx’s.

In this section, we continue to develop our model of the economy by discussing how these factor markets work. Economists have long studied factor markets to understand the distribution of income. For example, Karl Marx, the noted nineteenth-century economist, spent much time trying to explain the incomes of capital and labor. The political philosophy of communism was in part based on Marx’s now-discredited theory.

which might have something to do with why students walked out of his class in 2011 (though I guess not as shocking since he's a right-winger who advised Bush on economic policy)...

Data from JLL estimates that in early 2014 almost 10% of all money spent in property in London was Russian. In the luxury residential market, numbers were even higher. According to Knight Frank, more than 20% of London homes with asking prices in excess of £10m were purchased by Russians.

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-07-25/ok-boomer-coronavirus-is-turning-millennials-into-socialists

The pandemic is turning Millennials into socialists. We must make them a better offer. [...] And as I’ve argued, this means reviving classical liberalism — not in the American sense of “left” but in the European sense of “freedom.”

I'm pretty sure classical economics and its derivatives, all taking a capitalist commodity-exchanging economy as their eternal sacred basis, "won" and is why you see Smith's and Malthus's ideas praised in textbooks and Marx's condemned. Not sure what there is to revive, kind of like people saying this isn't genuine capitalism but crony capitalism.

This is also awful but expected coming from the billionaire's website

Whether Millennials actually use the word “socialism” properly — as government ownership of the means of production — is moot. More likely, they simply want better public policy that addresses their specific problems. Even then, however, they often fall prey to political snake oil such as rent controls or wealth taxes.

At this critical hour, every appropriate means of non-violent action must be utilized to remove this regime from power. And if, in spite of mass protest demanding the removal of the Trump/Pence regime, this regime remains in power when it is time for voting, then—without placing fundamental reliance on this—using all appropriate means to work for the removal of this regime must include voting against Trump (assuming the election is actually held). To be clear, this means not a “protest vote” for some candidate who has no chance of winning, but actually voting for the Democratic Party candidate, Biden, in order to effectively vote against Trump.

Despite Tengely-Evans’s rhetorical finger-wagging over Stalinism, the SWP’s party regime shares some quite profound similarities with that of the CPB/YCL ‘party of a new type’. With one rider: the CPB is a little bit more open than the SWP; YCL members are generally better educated than their SWP counterparts; and it’s often possible to debate with CPB/YCL members on a reasonably comradely basis without undergoing the SWP amateur dramatics that would accompany such happenings. That’s not saying an awful lot, but it only underlines how desperately unappealing and boring the SWP is. What’s worse is that its members do appear to be realising all that in a latent and coded manner.
