CONTAGIOUS STRIKES - Talk on workers' struggles in China

In mid-2010 a strike wave rolled through China's factories, the most widespread and militant struggle of China's internal migrant workers so far. The struggle shook the Chinese regime and provoked a world-wide debate: Is this the beginning of the end of the low-wage model... that stands behind China's rise to the 'factory of the world' and provides the rest of the world with cheap consumer products? The workers' strikes conitinued in 2011, and together with riots and peasant uprisings they are indicators for the increasing pressure for social change in China.

The talk is being given by a member of the German communist group Wildcat, who has been living in China. You can read some of their articles translated into English here: http://www.wildcat-www.de/en/eindex.htm

Free School = an afternoon of workshops on a wide variety of topics related to radical politics. We've usually had 6 workshops/afternoon in hour-long blocks, with two at the same time. They are held fortnightly at the moment.

They came out of the Occupy stuff in Sydney, and have been heaps good so far imo, being well attended and with a high standard of discussion.

As I understand there are also Free Universities happening in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Melbourne Free University --

http://melbournefreeuniversity.org/

-- has been going since 2009/2010 now and most recently in conjunction w Occupy Melbourne. It takes its immediate inspiration from Michel Onfray's thing in France --

-- but of course has many other antecedents in popular education.

hey all,

I really enjoyed this talk. I think it raised some interesting questions about formal vs informal organisation and the role of 'the left'. Plus I pretty much knew fuck all about China beforehand. If you haven't been its worth getting along to.

Is anyone in contact with this person? How long is he in Melbourne for? If he wants to come to Adelaide next, we'll pay for his plane ticket and he can stay at my house, we'd want at least a week to advertise the event though.
