Rent increases

Hi all,

There's been some pretty hefty rental increases in Brisbane lately. Word on the street is that rental prices are gonna go up by 20%. Are rents going up elsewhere in Oz? People are gonna be pissed off.

Anyway, my reason for posting is that I'm interested in analogous campaigns against taxes and price increases. I need to start thinking about the possibility of concerted action here. Like I know some posters refer to the poll taxes. Is this stuff in the library? Isn't there some water tax issues in Ireland at the mo?

(Personal anecdote: Our rent went from $230/wk to $280/wk, up $50!!! We were gonna move, told some guy I was taking over his lease, filled out the forms, etc. However, when handing over the notice to leave the lady at the real estate office said she didn't want us to go coz we're such good tenents embarrassed and bargained down the increase. Weeks ago our individual property manager said there was absolutely nothing he could do about the rent increase roll eyes . So we're staying. (Incidently, Pete, if you're reading this, we were gonna be moving the weekend you're coming up so I wouldn't have been a bouncing bean when I met you) It was weighing on my conscious that I went back on my word to take over this other guys lease so I paid him a week's rent for breaking a verbal contract. It should cover him if it takes a little extra time for him to find someone else than he planned for.)

Lying bunch of cunts! twisted Bargained my arse! Fucked up on the greed factor more like. I live in a shed out in the boonies now which is sweet nowadays rent wise smile but pretty fucked in regards to engaging with otherscry but when i was a brissie dweller my experience was that it was the real estate whores who were responsible for the upping of rent a lot of the time. On one occasion I was living somewhere where we paid rent to a realestate cuntpany but the owner would do any repairs. Once when we had notice that the rent was gonna go up we hit the owner up for a reason. He capitulated and told us that the realo's told him that they could get more.angry Got another... I lived with a bloke who had some property himself but got the realo's to handle them for him. He told me that the realo's were always looking to put the rent up on his properties to which he would often tell them to get fucked as he liked the idea of not screwing people on struggle street too much. I wont go any further...wall Got another... On two occasions I have been lucky enough to live in places where I didn't have to deal with real estate cunts. The first time was for 4 years without a rent increase and whenever anything went wrong the owner was there in a flash without all of the bollocks that real estate cunts go on with about owner not willing to pay for blah blah blah. The second was a place that I lived at for two years. No rent increase, straight up two year lease and when something went wrong the owner said just to get someone out and get the bill sent to him. Nothing was any drama. When we moved out another of our flatmates took over for another 3 year lease - all at the same rent. Bit of a rant I know but REAL ESTATE AGENTS ARE CUNTS!!! grin

Thanks for the heads up. I'd always considered the real estate agents as mediating between owners and tenants, but yeah, they do have their own interests. Food for thought. I think the relationship between the three is gonna vary according to circumstance. Like,I still have a degree of trust in our current real estate but hate the owner.

Nah they are fucken scum, They keep you stupid and line their pockets. A relation of my partner's was planning on renting a place he owned when moving in with his partner.

Not knowing anything about the rental game he went to a real estate agent who did rental work. He wanted to leave the rental low so it would be affordable and have some say over who moved in (ie a family not students...) The real estate agent wasn't keen on the low rent thing ( remember he's paid a percentage) as that sort of thing would artificially lower rental prices in the area, he also would have no control over who moved in. He decidied to sell.

About a year and a half ago my dad died leaving me in posession of his house, I decided to sell it, I carefully vetted real estate agents and got a guy who I thought would do a good job, after signing the agreement ended up mostly dealing with his boss who was a vicious piece work work - they just wanted to sell the place a quickly as possible and find another sucker. The put myself and my partner through the ringer when the offers started rolling in trying to get my signature on the dotted line.

They are all scum and all deserve to be first up against the wall come the revolution
