SKILLS & RESOURCES DATABASE

A suggestion has been made that we set up some kind of 'Skills On Offer / Resources Available' type database. Whether people want to formally publicise what they have to offer may be a different question, but there certainly is a lot of skill and experience out there would could be shared more systematically with others.

This is really intended to get that started. I'll think about what skills I myself have to offer, and get back to you, but what you have to offer could be a range of things, from sheer free-time to help out, free photocopying, free banner making equipment, ropes for climbing, that sort of thing, or anything.

Maybe this list won't take of in such a straightforward way, but I'm just trying to get things started, so if you do have anything to offer, just start adding what that may be as a comment, and the first pieces of a future database will have been started. Over to you people...

Just to say that if we do start getting people publicising what they can offer the idea can then be steadily upgraded, with a new and tidier thread as the next step, and then a dedicated webpage as the next step on from that... So if someone were to offer IT skills that could be part of that....

Hmmmh, I think the trouble with this sort of thing is that different people feel compelled to help in different campaigns. Take an example from the bristol peace vigil I heard about. A person came along and starting talking, you know the sort of thing how they thought it was a great thing etc.. they noticed that some of the signs and banners were looking a bit tired and offered to get their graphic designer friend to do new waterproof laminated signs. Until they saw a pro-palestinian sign and said they cou;dn't help after all and walked off.

How will this sort of thing be avoided?

Will it just be an easy way for the pigs to work out who's doing what?

Some valid points from tree boy. Obviously people have to use their brains and only offer resources/skills that are generally acceptable and not incriminating - photocopying, layout, climbing, spare time etc are not as yet illegal in the UK in 2004.

The problem though is moving beyond the list of skills offered by faceless folks, and into the reality of putting em into practice. Aah yes, I smell the beauty of face to face human contact!

Shall we proceed? wink

Yeah, I reckon if we're careful we could actually get something going here. What we need to think about is what details do we need to give?

For instance if some one can offer some time for say delivering leaflets how will they inform others of this and more importantly how will they be contacted?

Are people thinking to use email? I suppose it is ultimately up to individuals whether they advertise their skills or not. As MH says if people are sensible it shouldn't be a problem.

This sounds like a good project just thought 'id chip in what help we can offer. Us at enrager.net would be happy to give a few trusted individuals access to http://enrager.net/britain/southwest/ to expand, update and maintain as they wish if anyone was interested.

Good luck! Mr. T

cool, that would provide a way for getting details centralised.

I reckon a small number of people could actually get this off the ground. I suppose it could work like a directory? you could have a small number of categories that would encompass the things people are willing and able to do.

How will people contact each other?
