Chants for demos

What are the best class-struggle anarchist chants to use on demonstrations?

The only one i know is

1,2,3,4
Escalate the class war!
5,6,7,8
Organise to smash the state! (also variations like "smash the bosses, smash the state")

I ask because all the demos are currently dominated by SWP/SP chants that stick to tired old lines of con-dem cuts.

What about

Liberal, Labour, Tory
Same old ****ing story!

As was pointed out to us at the Radical Workers Bloc in Brighton in March last year, this slogan doesn't necessarily go down that well with public sector workers facing redundancy.

No-tory-cuts? No, no, no, no-tory-cuts?

Tbh not a big fan of chanting unless it's a one liner, it can be the cleverest chant in the world but if you've heard it once...

Jim, aren't you aware that, to many workers on the demo who don't know much about politics (yet), 'Smash the State!' sounds just like 'Sack the lazy public sector bastards!' or, for the older ones, it will remind them of Thatcher's tirades against the 'state' sector. She was all for 'smashing the state', too.

At present, they are all in favour of the state - it pays their wages. To them, it's not 'a good chant', but just childishness from the 'loony left'.

If your aim is to try and persuade workers to listen to arguments in favour of Libertarian Communism, perhaps it's better not to repel them at first sight (or sound), but to use slogans or chants which attract them to you on the march. Then, in the pub afterwards, you can regale your now willing audience with the delights of Lib Com.

It's called politics, I think, although that seems to be a dirty word for some here. And don't forget, I'm on your side. I think.

Jim, there may well be a time for chanting 'Smash the state!', but I have to agree with others here that a public sectors workers demo isn't the right one.. smile

in brighton we tried to chant 'fight the bosses, fight the state', but mostly the anarchies were all about the smashing. which led to some hilarious commentary in the local paper, where our slogans were criticised from the left as not adequately addressing the interests of workers in struggle.

wanted a Friends of Durruti themed one, so how about:

Fuck off with your catchy slogans
We need rifles, and a program

omg that is brilliant, i think i mite get that made in to a placard laugh out loud

But seriously, i thought this thread could be a useful place to start collating different chants we are happy to use and ones we think other non-politicos on marches will occasionally join in with.

I remember another one from that brighton demo was

Stop the workers being betrayed,
Solidarity, mutual aid!

It seemed a bit lacklustre tho, and i think in the local paper it said this was out-dated!

Rather than the Shame on you, shame on you! chant against the police, i think

No justice, no peace,
Fuck the police!

is a good one

There was one I remember reading on a report of an earlier demo... can't remember the full thing but it ended in '..bullshit, come off it, the enemy is profit'. Maybe that could be made more family friendly for a demo.

Apart from that, I don't think I've heard any anarchist chants. Lots of Anarchist songs, but not chants.

The full version of that chant was from the original ANL era (iirc) and went:

"Unemployment and inflation, are not caused by immigration.
Bullshit. Come off it. The enemy is profit"

The stagflationary references date it (but could soon be relevant again given current economic trends) and its clearly more of an anti-fascist or anti-racist chant than anti-austerity/cuts. Plus for older activists it has an unfortunate association with memories of interminable SWP chanting, but still.

Mindlessly repeated chants can get very tedious after a while. One of my favourite situ-style ironic chants was:

The slogan, exhausted, must now be repeated!

They're greedy, whoooao, they're greedy whoooooao, they came to grab all our cash, jumped on the banking crash

Also to the tune of Notorious: Ungovernable un-un-un-un-ungovernable, we are, we are (repeat)

And to the tune of Milkshake... Anarcho-syndicalism brings all the boys to the yard and they're like, it's better than yours...

That is brilliant.

Although it perpetuates the idea that it's Tory cuts, but it's so good I'm not sure that matters.

Add a second line?

Labour Labour we remember, thirteen years that you're no better

bit weak.

A couple from the Bristol IWW songbook:

(To the tune of my old man’s a dustman)

Ohhhhhh, Cameron is a Tory, he’s got a big fat cat,
They taken all our money, and now we want it back,
They’re cutting on the left side, they’re cutting on the right,
But now we’re all together, and we’re up for a fight!

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT THE CUTS!
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT THE CUTS!

Ohhhhhh, Janke is a wanker, she wears a Tory hat,
She wants to be the mayor, but she’s full of fucking crap,
She’s cutting on the left side, she’s cutting on the right,
But now we’re all together, and we’re up for a fight!

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT THE CUTS!
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT THE CUTS!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To the tune of ‘que sera’ (apologies to Saints fans and others!)

When i was just a little boy, i asked my mother what should i be?
Should i be selfish, greedy and mean?
Here’s what she said to me
Wash you mouth out son, and get your fathers gun!
And shoot the fat cat scum, que sera, sera

WE! HATE! FAT CATS!
WE! HATE! FAT CATS!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extended version of ‘Mickey’ for your viewing delight….

George Osborne, you’re so shit
You’re so shit you’re full of it
George Osborne, George Osborne X 3

Hey Osborne

You’ve been Chancellor a few months
And that’s a little long.
You say you’ve got it right
But we say you’ve got it wrong.
Its time to say goodnight
So you can fuck off now George Osborne.
Cos when you say you will
It always means you won’t.
You’re sendin us the bills to pay
The bankers won’t
And in the end you’ll still
Leave us all alone Osborne.

Oh Cameron
What a pity you don’t give a shit.
You mates caused the crisis but you make us pay for it.
Oh Cameron
You’re so smug
Can’t you understand.
It’s twats like you Cameron
Ooh what you do Cameron
Do Cameron
We see through you Cameron.

Hey Cameron

Now when you step on us
We’ll stand back up and fight
And every time you move
You move further to the Right.
Our day is coming fast
So now you know Cameron.

So come on and give it to us
Anyway you can
Anyway you want to do it
We’ll fight back while we can.
Your fat cat mates
Won’t help you then, Cameron.

The Tories never gave a shit about you
Labour sold out and the Lib Dems too
Their attacks on working people
Are cynical and vain
As they grow fat off the gravy train
Ooh what you do Cameron
Do Cameron
We say fuck you Cameron.

Oh Cameron, you’re so shit
You’re so shit you’re full of it
Oh Cameron, Oh Cameron

George Osborne, you’re a dick
Your bloody voice it makes me sick
George Osborne, George Osborne

Oh Boris, you’re so fat
Cut your hair you fuckin twat
Hey Boris Hey Boris

All you politicians,
Pride comes before a fall,
And an injury to one,
Is an injury to all
Solidarity is stronger than
you can understand,
Its part and parcel
Of that Union brand!

Ooh its up to us now!
Stand up now
Fight the Cuts Now!

I don't like this chant mainly because to me it sounds like they're describing the sentence "unemployment and inflation are not caused by immigration" as bullshit.

And Yorkie Bars chants are ace.

Good one from the York Stop the Cuts Demos:

"George Osborne he don't care, cos he is a millionaire!"

Could say Nick Clegg, David Cameron as well.

Also, bizarrely:

"Kill the rich! Eat their kids!"

To the tune of 'No Sleep til Brooklyn': No! War! But-class-war!

It's pretty context-specific however. Very popular (I liked it anyway) in 2003, I believe.

Not really a fan of chants at all and generally cringe/feel awkard when surrounded by a load of slogantistas.

That said, this is my favourite, though more of a call to action than a chant-
"Comrades! Comrades!
to the town!
lets fuck shit up
and burn it down!"

"Smash it up
Burn it down,
Kick it till it breaks"?

Alternatively

"Slogan slogan slogan
Chant chant chant!"

"A-Anti-Anti-capitalista" Is a absolute pain in the arse and should never be repeated again.

Kill the rich! Eat their kids! wins in terms of impact for me. Would be cool to have a anti-capitalist cannibal bloc on the 26th.

I'm in the process of trying to set a rank-and-file group up at work and I think this might well be our unofficial anthem! cool

The only chant I can normally be arsed joining in with on demos is the old skool "The workers united will never be defeated!" Although personally I think it should be broadened to "The working-class..."
