Marx im Westen or Marx in the West

For decades, the complementary discourses of Eastern party and later state official Marxism and Western anti-communism claimed the almost unlimited power to define what was commonly regarded as 'Marxian theory' or 'scientific socialism'. By contrast, from the mid-1960s a new reading movement, especially in the Federal Republic of Germany, set out to discover the original scientific content of Marxian thought. The rubble of the previous 100 years was to be cleared away in order to make room for the reconstruction of a critical theory of society with an innovative understanding of methods and objects. The book presents the sources, history and results of this new discussion context. Three strands of the debate are examined in more detail: methodological and value-theoretical basic research, the derivation of the state, and the investigation of the revolutionary theoretical implications of the critique of political economy. It will be shown that in a research process that is by no means completed, the outlines of a theory applied by Marx can be discerned that can give important impulses for understanding modern forms of wealth and rule and in many ways show the opposite of what Marx was thought to know in Marxist and non-Marxist circles.
