The strike began after the Charest government announced an increase in tuition fees.

The strike was voted on by the student groups involved in ASSÉ (Student Solidarity union association) in protest at the planned increases which would amount to 30% over five years.

The 265 anthropolgy students were the only ones to put this into practise, launching their strike on the 18th of October after an AG at which 68% declared themselves in favour of strike action. They voted to continue action by 79% at the next AG on the 23rd, however none of the other groups joined them in their action.

The students are expected to participate in the strikes and protests called for 14-16 November, the other student groups are expecred to participate in this action.
