The Daily Mirror reported that a strike breaking Royal Mail boss was arrested yesterday after his lorry had a crash with a van killing the driver.

Office worker Phil Edmonds, 46, was at the wheel of the articulated truck when the vehicles collided, pushing the Astra van into the central reservation of a dual carriageway.

The 56-year-old driver, from Exeter, Devon, died and his passenger had to be cut free. The busy A379 at Matford was shut for 10 hours.

Mr Edmonds, who usually works in revenue and audit in Plymouth, is being quizzed on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He is believed to be among 5,000 managers drafted in as 30,000 staff staged a 24-hour strike over pay. The CWU said: "This is an appalling tragedy. Sadly it demonstrates the extreme measures the Royal Mail is taking to mitigate the effects of the strike instead of talking about it."

The Royal Mail denied bosses are driving without adequate training.
