London event (next Monday) - Against the Byron immigration raid

Submitted by Craftwork on July 28, 2016

Hi, could you please share this event (https://www.facebook.com/events/318098661863389/) on the libcom.org FB page. Thanks. The event is on Monday (01/08/16), 18:30, outside 'Byron Holborn', organised by United Voices of the World union, London IWW, South London Solfed, and more.

Info on the Byron immigration raid:

"Last week, the Spanish language publication El Ibérico reported that on the evening of July 4th, the private equity fund* owned Byron burgers chain brought a large number of their migrant worker staff members to special 'training' session across 15 Byron restaurants in London.

When they arrived, immigration police were waiting for them and a reported 50 were arrested and deported. A further 150 managed to avoid deportation and are in hiding acording to the source.

Those deported were mostly Latin American workers. It is not clear what kind of shock and hardship their families in London are now experiencing, or whether the workers were paid their wages or any monies owed by the company.

Some of the deported workers had worked for Byron for four years. Byron were happy to use them all that time and then discard them and ruin lives overnight."

Is there any chance you could write a news story which mentions all the planned protests? Afaik there's one in Manchester on Friday and another in London organised by the IWW on the same day, as well as the one on Monday. Would be better to share that and build all the events.

I was at the London one on 1 August, together with jaycee and a comrade from France, though we couldn't stay long. But in the short time I was there:
- there was the chanting of the slogan "No borders, no nations, no deportations!", which you could argue was a step up from just "no borders"
- I met Craftwork in the flesh and we talked until interrupted by
- a young North African woman from what I think she described as an independent Arabic website or blog, carrying a mic/recorder. When she saw the paper with the title World Revolution she asked us for an interview, and I agreed to say a few words. But foolishly I didn't stick around to find more information about the blog. Can anyone add details?
Interestingly, when I said that the slogan "No borders, no nations", if thought through logically, implies an international revolution against the system, she said that she agreed with that.
