Anarchists in education: The Free Popular University in Egypt (1901)

A journal article by Anthony Gorman on the Free Popular University (Università Popolare Libera) in Egypt, which was declared officially open in Alexandria on the evening of Sunday, 26 May 1901. Inspired by Élisée Reclus and organised mostly by Italian anarchists, this radical initiative sought to 'promote the discussion of scientific culture and literature among the popular classes’ on the basis of secularism, internationalism and anti-authoritarianism.
