Against Racism and Authoritarianism: the Problem is Capitalism!

“We will chase them out!” Alexander Gauland bawled straight after the entry of the Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany, AfD) to the Bundestag. It should be clear, at least after the racist riots in Chemnitz and Köthen, that this was no empty threat. The AfD’s rise has lent wings to the entire extreme right and is increasingly being translated into racially-motivated violence on the street.

Protests against the party conference of AfD (Alternative für Deutschland – Alternative for Germany) in Hannover met violent police repression. During its party conference, AfD elected new leaders, two hardliners whose victory indicates a further drift to the extreme right of the party.

Germany elects a new parliament and government on 24 September. It seems certain that the CDU will carry the majority, thus continuing the by now 12-year reign of Angela Merkel. The run-up to the election seems dull. But there is a real danger that with the Alternative für Deutschland, fascists could enter the German parliament.
