1936-1939: The Spanish Civil War and revolution

A short history of the Spanish Civil War and Revolution which broke out in response to the right-wing and fascist coup attempt of General Franco.

The war lasted for three years and ended with Franco's victory, aided by fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The revolution saw huge swathes of Spanish industry and agriculture socialised and run collectively by the workers and peasants.

Spain: Supermarket strike in Barcelona to enter second month

This Saturday the 22nd of April will mark the end of the first month of an indefinite strike in Barcelona by workers at the Sant Sadurni d'Anoia logistics centre for the major Spanish Supermarket chain Mercadona.

The dispute began with the sacking of three members of the anarcho-syndicalist union the CNT working at the centre, the culmination of a campaign of threats by the company against workers unionising at the centre. Even before a strike was declared the company brought in scab workers, attempting to preempt the actions of their own employees.

Spain: Thousands march against new labour laws

As millions fight new employment laws in France, last week 5,000 people marched in Madrid against new proposed labour reforms in Spain.

On Saturday 1st April the Spanish anarcho-syndicalist trade union, the CNT, held a demonstration and workers arrived in buses from all over the country to attend.

Swedish syndicalist postmen black extreme right-wing propaganda

On Monday the 27th of March the postal workers syndicate of the Stockholm area, affiliated to anarcho-syndicalist union the SAC, refused to deliver extreme right-wing propaganda from the party Nationaldemokraterna - the National Democrats.

The reformist postal union SEKO urged their members to deliver it but many of them refused or stayed at home claiming illness, echoing the actions of many British postal workers who refused to deliver BNP materials in 2004.
