Struggles in the Spanish shipyards re-ignite - reports from September and October 2004
This is a blow by blow account of the shipyard workers revolt in Spain in the Autumn of 2004. The revolt was in response to the Spanish state declaring that half the shipyards were to be privatised.
The workers resistance was met with violence from the police leading to major confrontations. It was originally a photographic report, hence the rather sparse texts about individual events.

ROCA IN GAVA
Roca Radiators Ltd is situated in Gava, some 35 km south west of Barcelona. Founded at the beginning of the century by the Roca family it now employs some 4,500 workers and is listed as the 65th largest company is Spain. Some 20% of the share capital was owned by American Standard but these shares were sold as soon as the strike began.

France: demonstrations by school students continue to grow
Demonstrations against the Darcos reforms of the education system are intensifying with more students joining protests and taking more direct action.
Students are angry about reforms to the French secondary examination course, the baccalaureate and also about the planned loss of 25000 teaching posts over the next two years. Today's demonstration (11th Dec.) was called by the school students' union (UNL), the union has called for another day of action next Thursday although it looks as if many students will continue action tomorrow.

Whilst there have been various small protests in places around the country to resist these changes, no major local campaign has existed as of yet. Sussex not 4 Sale was born out of this context.

Belgium: striking workers at sub-contractor close Ford plant
Workers at Syncreon, formerly TDS Automotive, went on strike on Monday.
The strike began on Monday after 81% of Syncreon's 250 workers voted in an assembly to reject a new salary structure as it did not includes figures for a salary increase. Workers had been demanding an increase of one euro per hour.

A brief account of the results of the meeting, attended by at least 1000 students.
The first motion was that strike committees and coordination with workers and other students were the favoured step and were necessary to win. It refused all attempts to negotiate before the law is withdrawn. and denounced the UNEF for trying to do so.
This was passed by such a massive majority that there was no count.
