Bus and truck drivers in central Somalia were on strike yesterday following a hike in local taxes

Strikers claimed that the local government was increasing taxes whilst failing to do anything about the security situation on roads between Hiran and Madug provinces, there are a number of illegal checkpoints set up by armed militias.

Bus drivers strike in Holland

Public transport was disrupted yesterday as bus drivers employed by Connexxion went on unofficial strike on 19 routes in the Amsterdam-Zaandam region.

dutchnews.nl reported that a spokeswoman for the bus company told ANP this afternoon that the action had been called just before the weekend and that she could not say how long it would last.

The drivers are unhappy with the bus timetables which were changed when new train schedules were introduced in December.

In September, 2005 several thousand riders of Muni - San Francisco's city-owned transit system - participated in a mass fare strike, to fight service cuts, layoffs, and the second fare hike in two years. More than five dozen people were actively involved in the organizing. The last action connected with the fare strike was a November 10th protest march, initiated by the organized day laborers.

Imprisoned Iranian trade unionist released

Mansour Osanloo, leader of the Iranian bus workers' union, was today released from prison on bail after being imprisoned since November 19th.

The ITUC and the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) today welcomed the release of detained Iranian trade unionist Mansour Osanloo, while deploring the fact that he had to post additional bail to ensure his release. Osanloo was already on bail of 150 million Toman (US$ 165,000), stemming from his previous detention by the authorities from 22 December 2005 to 9 August 2006.

Two more Iranian trade unionists were detained today while a third continues to be imprisoned.

December 3, 2006 - According to a news release issued by the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Sherkat-e Vahed), two other members of the Board of Directors of the union were arrested today, December 3rd, 2006 in Tehran's Khavaran bus terminal but were released late this evening. They are scheduled to appear in court tomorrow morning, December 4, 2006.
