O'Neill Cuestas, Fernando, 1924-2005

A short biography of the Uruguayian anarchist and historian who was one of the founding members of the FAU, and later was involved in the Tupamaros guerrila movement.

O'Neill Cuestas, Fernando [Zapicán] (1924-2005), revolutionary and historian of anarchism in Uruguay, was born on 15 September 1924 in Mercedes, capital of the Department of Soriano, Uruguay, the eldest son of Fernando O’Neill Parada (1890-1976) and his wife, Aurora Cuestas Acosta (1897-1977). O’Neill’s first known ancestor in Uruguay on his father’s side is his grandfather, Daniel O’Neill.

PDF pamphlet of a history of the Federacion Anarquista Uruguaya (FAU). Founded in 1956 it was one on the strongest anarchist movements in Latin America. In the 1960s, it faced a rising tide of repression which would culminate in the military dictatorship of 1973-85. Ihe FAU is still active today.

"Huerta Grande" is a seminal text of South American Especifismo. It was written in 1972 as an internal discussion document of the Federación Anarquista Uruguaya, right before the brutal military coup was installed in 1973. This is the first English translation.
